Following the tutorial here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuMagazine/HowTo/InstallingSteam

Iv actually got steam installed without any problem, even updated steam! But steam wont load, the log in bit comes up but nothing else.

I missed out the step
After wine is done being installed, run wine iexplore http://winehq.org and install Gecko.
I suspect that is the problem. But i do not understand it!. I cant find anywhere to download and install this gecko thing?
thanks

Ok installed, terraria and it works wonderfully! but i cant help to notice that steam runs extremely slow while other programs run fast, iv got terraria running on a 2nd screen and im typeing this. Steam is extremely slow! is this due to wine?

Quite possibly, yes. I stopped using Wine as I had many issues with it; do you know of any problems reported on the Wine AppDB that are similar to the one you're experiencing? There might be some fixes listed if so. :)

iv had a look and tried a few things, changing from vista > xp has made a difference but its a 50/50 chance steam will actually load up. When it loads up when wines set to run as xp, its slow but not as bad when its running in vista mode.
Ill continue looking and maybe play around with the settings and switch off ubuntu stuff that i dont need. Could possibly because the pc cant cope, its only a dual core 2.3ghz with 4gb ram.

I doubt its the hardware, its just the fact that you're running windows apps in linux via another peice of linux software that interfaces the two. Its always going to be slower than running software in its native environment. IMO a dual boot is a much better idea if windows games are important to you.

I am having a problem with steam in wine on mint 12 if that makes sense. I keep getting the steam error failed to contact key server.
If any one could help that would be excellent.

I had loads of trouble getting steam to work on Linux recently, though I still think it's worth a try if that's what you prefer :) I ended up choosing an alternative solution for my Linux gaming needs - I still use Steam on Windows but for Linux I would prefer to use a native game client, in which case I am using Desura. Bit of a shamless plug I know, but with a big enough userbase and time it might be enough to convince more developers (e.g. the Terraria developers) to produce Linux native games without the need for an emulation layer?

Just found this if you want to investigate a Steam free way of running Terraria on Linux? :)

I do have my gaming rig at home with windows on. I have just got an old laptop that I take to work. I was wanting to play rome TW or Hearts of Iron 3. I think Iwill just try linux games without using wine as it is an old laptop.
