Morning all

I'm looking at building a small server for home use. Probably (to begin with) 2 drives - one for system files, one for data.

Not a clue which OS to use on it, as always licensing is a fun issue :(

I would like to go low-power and small-ish, so as not to break the power bill or take up silly space. I like the idea of say, an atom chipset, but don't know enough about them.

Intended use: File serving/centralisation, possibly a play exchange server, might do DHCP as well...

Very open to suggestions...

Yeah... that server could do. But, if you want at more less price then you will have to find another affordable provider. Also, you have asked for which OS? As mentioned, that licensing fees is always an issue, then I would recommend to go with Linux operating system. Linux distributions are absolutely free and you will find numerous software's to install licensed under GNU General Public License, which are completely free.

I would use Linux but if you're not comfortable using Linux just get a copy of W7 HP and turn all the bloat off and you're good to go or even old copy of XP or Vista that you might have lieing around would be fine.
