Small SUV type advice

My mum has a tiguan mk2 and it's a really good car. It's not a petrolhead car and wasn't designed to be but for her it's perfect as she has a bad back making climbing into low cars difficult and also takes my grandparents around. The SE Nav and SEL are the models to go for, SE nav is a little more basic but is still loaded, the SEL is properly loaded with adaptive cruise, lane assist, pan roof, digital drivers display etc etc . Some of the plastics aren't the best at the door pockets etc but she doesn't tend to drive along rubbing the interior materials and it seems solidly built. It was either this or a used Q5 and the tiguan is the better car in spec and tech terms and haven't regretted the decision once

My karoq should be coming in the next month or so. I picked it as it's the cheapest / most amount of kit while at the same time being quite nice to drive.

Actually an X1 (F48) has 505/1550l (seats up/down) of boot space versus a 3er touring (F31) 495/1500l. Smaller chassis means nothing, you're comparing an essentially front wheel chassis with only 4cyl engines with a rear wheel drive chassis that can fit IL6 engines.

Saying that I'd much prefer a 3er touring to an X1 :D.

More space in the front which is where the OP will spend their time. It's also a much better drive and as you point put has a much better choice of engines.

Kia Sportage? Either a compact SUV or large/tall hatchback depending on your POV.

Loving ours, comes with 7 year warranty plus reasonably cheap 5 year service package. Only thing I'd recommend if you can afford it is go L2 or above, so you get the parking camera.
