Smallish SUV

Yeah would need to be looking at the mild hybrid for AWD.

The Tucson may also be worth a look

Don't go Hyundai/ Kia, you will be disappointed at the level of road noise. Parents have a Tucson 21 plate and it's not very quiet in the road noise department, my 18 year old Audi a4 is quieter on the road

I'd go for the lexus or the Volvo

I was a passenger in a 3008 Hybrid for a couple of trips last week and it was smooth and comfortable. Dunno if that's the exact kinda thing you're looking for though.
They are indeed comfortable and the 3008 is an interesting proposal. The 408 is even more interesting but would probably go for the C5X instead.

Have to say I had a 2021 Volvo v60 R pro estate and also some of the other units at work have them. A complaint I had and a few of my colleagues at work.. seats causing bad backs.

I do lean towards Japanese over French cars but I was impressed with the 3008. I did see a 408 in the local ASDA carpark yesterday, and it looked really nice. No idea what they are like to drive though.

I have a XC40, on a lease, for about 2 years and I love it. Few trips from the NW to Cambridge and MPG showing around 35-40MPG. It's a T5 hybrid Inscription Pro. It's comfy and quick. They are quite expensive but if I was to buy a car it would be high on my list, likely a good second hand model.

It is scary what is happening in this country with the used car market - write-offs, ghost MOT's etc. Unless you are a mechanic or have a trusty mechanic who can check the car for you there is a risk of investing tens of thousands on a lemon (even if you buy a dealer approved vehicle!)

My brother has an XC40 plug in hybrid and I've been in it once or twice and I have to admit I was surprised at the interior I was expecting much better it felt quite cheap and I drive a 9 year old Civic

Ride quality seemed nice though
