Dont know why most of you are being very aggressive about it. They wouldn't explain what they meant by smart casual and just said look at others and do the same. I have never worn "smart" cloths in my life (apart from the 1 suit). Lots of conflicting information online everywhere about what it means and what colours go together. Saw plenty of people there with black polo/black dress pants and brown shoes.

I mean Black Chinos, Brown Loafers/slip on shoes (I will blister in anything else), Black/Blue polo/casual shirt btw not just black pants. I cant wear colours, the guy who interviewed me said it has to be either white/pale blue tucked in dress shirt with formal dress pants or black/grey/dark blue casual shirt/polo. I will not wear a dress shirt with no jacket over the top (and I wont wear a jacket as its too hot), unless your skinny it looks stupid (I'm not fat but I cant pull of the slim waistline with a belt look you see in adverts and crap.

Smart casual = dress smart and smash the job. If other employees want to walk about like they're on holiday, fair play to them. IMHO

OK, initially, for something cheap - go to M&S - they have a selection of trousers that will look smart enough for the office (and unlike suit trousers are machine washable). Don't wear black! You're probably going to struggle to find some anyway tbh... you'll want dark grey or charcoal(which is probably what you meant when you said black anyway), navy, light grey etc.. some with faint stripes some plain. Brown could work too since it is supposed to be casual.

you can also get shirts there cheaply enough without them being completely dire.. also check out TM Lewin and Charles Tyrwhitt for cheap but decent enough shirts too as they usually have sales on. If you're normal size then generally you'll want some variant of 'slim fit' as most of these places market the standard shirt at overweight blokes in their 40s or 50s.

For polo shirts for the office you could grab a bunch in TK Maxx quite cheaply.

I have always interpreted smart-casual to be, shoes & trousers/chinos and a shirt/tie.

Smart to be a suit and casual to be a shirt and chinos/jeans.
