Smart Meter Thread

Wouldn't touch one until they are compatible with all suppliers. I hear there are trials going but even then it is only a couple of suppliers so still pointless.

Also I don't want them to know when I use most of my electricity so they can charge me a premium during peak times. Thats what its all about really once everyone is on smart meters.

Dont worry, they come with a free tin foil hat . I don't agree that they save money tho, for me i just wanted a more accurate bill.

They don't save money at all. I'm quite capable of switching the TV off when I'm finished watching it and submitting my own readings for accurate bills.

I'll join the camp of avoiding them, at least for the foreseeable future :p

They're not going to save any money really, that's just one of the weirder claims for anything really.

I love how we've already got a plan going down the 'unlimited broadband' route, aka 'fair usage policy' applies...

There is also, as with any device connected to the internet, a security issue. Would be fine if they actually offered something worthwhile but I'm yet to see that from any claims or units mates/family have.

I had them fitted last week. Took the chap about an hour per meter. It won't save me money, It just means I won't have to go out read the meter and submit the details manually. My supplier is OVO.

I asked about how they work. They have a multi network sim card in the electricity meter and the gas connects to that via Bluetooth. I've got an in house monitor with also connects back to the electricity meter in the same way.

They don't work if you have Solar panels feeding electricity back to the grid. Or so BG tell me. I'm also told by 'experts' they can be hacked as they use basic mobile phone technology.
Andi.

That's going to make things fun: the electricity meter is the other end of the flat from the gas meter. Well out of the range of Bluetooth. Not to mention the 4 walls in between...

They must think everyone lives in a modern house with both meters externally next to each other on the same wall.

My gas meter is external at the front of the house while the electric meter is internal under the stairs at other end of house.

Don't know if im completely behind with these smart meters but do they do them for gas yet? I'm with First Utility and have a smart meter on the electric but nothing on my gas meter which is less than 30 cm away (albeit behind a stud partition and in an even smaller under stairs storage area).

They came to do my electricity one and with the meter being in the cellar they couldn't get a strong enough signal so in went a plain old dumb meter instead it really does seem odd that we have pushed ahead with this role out without a real plan and no guarantee of any savings anyway! I suspect the end result will just be bigger profits from all the foreign owned utilities companies!

The meter reader came round today so I asked him and he agreed that the distance between the gas meter and the electricity meter meant a smart meter wasn't feasible.

Don't see the point personally. I know if I leave things on when I'm not using them my bills will increase. I'm also capable of reading the meters and submitting the readings online.
It would be more cost effective if they just rolled it out to all new properties built as long as all suppliers can use them which doesn't seem to be the case at the moment. Someone is footing the bill for all these conversions and it's really not the supplers....

+ the system could be hacked and we'd lose power or they'll be.....watching us.
Tin foil hat time :D
