Smart meters.

Thanks, just DM'd you. They've been chasing the DCC team since mid-May according to my replies on Twitter
Seems like the DCC (third party company) has done nothing with it. Got the ball rolling though so see what happens :)

Comical that i mentioned comms hub dropouts to @BigBoy and then your issue is a comms hub communication issue

The Telefonica area specifically appears to have a major issue with power cycle (blackout/powercut/low power variance) issues, so when the power drops the Comms hubs go into panic mode rather than a low power state to save energy. They are apparently releasing a patch to all comms Hubs soon but it's got to be tested to an inch of its life before they will let it go live environment just incase it sends the whole network into a panic loop.

Are smart meters still causing issues then?

We got solar installed at the moment we still got an old school electricity meter.

To get an export tarrif we would need to get one installed, but for the sake of maybe £30-£40 a year I don't know if it's worth the hassle.

The meters are not the issue the communications on the other hand are a world unto them selves!

By old school - do you mean the type that can run backwards?

Errrr, no I don't think it does.

It's got a little mechanical disc, that clocks up little numbers that rotate around, like a scoreboard or something.

But I'm fairly certain (although I've seen the spinning disc go backwards) it doesn't start deducting from the total, shame.

After years of providers pestering me to get a smart meter i finally got one installed.

The gas meter doesn't seem to want to play ball and communicate with the provider :D
The installer advised it may take 48hours but i guessed that was so he was out the way and wouldn't be called back.
The next day i received an email from my supplier saying the gas meter not communicating as it should and could take up to 6 months to resolve.

Well as the gas meter is outside, they can come and take the readings themselves from now on.

If you are having a solar PV install you must upgrade your meter or you will get no feed in at all.

Yea I know we are not making anything fr the excess energy we are generating right now.

But given its about 4.5p per khw even over a year it doesn't work out that much money, over potential hassle of smart meters, or have they got better in recent years?

Yes they are far superior to ones installed 2-5 years ago, but the meter you have (mechanical spinny disk) MUST be replaced before you have a solar PV install due to the way the meter records

I'm pretty sure that won't have a backstop. You need to get that changed asap. Give your supplier a call - they'll be out pretty promptly to replace it.

For info... https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/fee...tricity-meters-running-backwards-afQO90P1oLps

Note the part about being billed retrospectively if you get caught.

Exactly this am at work or would have linked this myself.

It doesn't reverse the numbers, or the bill reading, at all.

I checked we left the house for several hours during the day with nothing on, when we came back the reading hadn't moved (as expected the solar should have covered all tick over) but certainly the numbers were not lower.

I think the little spinny disn thing is like an indicator rather than affecting the actual reading.

The spinny disc is a time keeping or measuring device it measures flow into the meter from left to right so cannot measure outgoing supply. The reason they should be upgraded to a more modern meter is 1. They have no backstop so potentially can cause them to read incorrectly when pulling from the grid. And 2. They have no way of recording passage out of the meter, meaning any generation out output it loss and cannot be tracked.

Either way, best to give your supplier a call and notify them of the PV installation and let them know you've got a mechanical meter. If they're notified, it's them up to then to update it.

The latest smart meters cost nothing to install, are much neater and give you a decent amount of useful data, so worth doing anyway.

Ok thanks both, might do it then. Be nice to get something back for this excess, even if it works out not much actual money.
