Hi All,

I have a friend who has asked me about smart plugs today for her dad. He wants to use them round the house for for his shed. Presuming the normal things such as on/off by command (they have Alexa in the house), monitoring, timers etc...

I am not up on these as much as I thought and my research suggests that the TP link products do the job well, but unsure if this true.

Anyone use smart plugs and got any opinions?

Thanks

Following. They pop up on HUKD frequently and there are all manner of opinions, apparently they all fail all the time every day for your whole life because the relays get stuck.

Or something.

I have 8 Meross smart plug minis (model MSS110).

Mind where you go on Amazon though. I needed 4 pairs (8 in total) but it would only let me buy 3 pairs even though no stock issue. I had to come back another day to buy the 4th pair. Not sure why that was enforced.

Something tells me the HUKD's word of the month is relay :D

Just make sure they are compatible with 5ghz. Had loads of issues with some older plugs that would only do 2.4ghz. Even though I can split my router into 2.4ghz and 5ghz it wouldn’t play ball.

what uses are people putting their smart plugs to?

Energy monitoring and remote control / smart home connectivity including schedules. Our living room heater for example could benefit from one as it's a basic switch style system, so we could turn the heating on whilst still in the car on the way home and be cosy wosy when we walk in.

I've got a bunch doing various jobs:
1. Christmas tree lights
2. Power monitoring my split AC system (useful reminder it's still switched on)
3. Power monitoring my Heatpump tumble dryer
4. Power monitoring my Server and enabling remote switch on (bios is set to power up when mains power is restored)
5. Appletv hard reset (it often plays up / hdmi signal not detected)
6. Sonos hard reset (disappears from Spotify unless it is power cycled)
7. Lamps that are part of zones/scenes but also for timer when on holiday.
8. My shower extractor fan is also hooked up to one. This means I can programme it to come on when it senses moisture too high from my govee humidistat or when it senses movement.

When I switch on a 2kw heater I know that is going to consume mucho electrico and is one of the reasons I have steered clear of the P110's
Generally they perform as expected.

Got loads of tapo ones that are running all sorts of stuff (lamps, coffee machine, tumble dryer etc etc), never had one fail or get stuck. Obviously not had them all the same length of time but the oldest is about 5 years old.

My outdoor Xmas lighting
All my house fans in summer
One on the car engine heater to schedule on off etc.

They fail now and then but i don't care 2.4ghz ones Swedish reseller called deltaco... Which they pronounce as del-taco but is obviously delta-co lol

All on tapo conglomerate app that Chinese crap uses

I have an few cheap one's connected through Alexa (they round generic one's for like £5 each

One on work PC to turn it off on
One on Nvidia shield to turn it's on off (linked with TV also)
Then light's are connected up through themselves

No fancy tapo, smart life app works just fine

Just make sure the rating is correct for the appliance or appliances you wish to control, some are only rated for 10amps draw and things like heaters may well draw more.
