SMART threshold check

Hi,

I have a possibly dodgy 250GB Maxtor Diamond thingy 10 and have tried running in the drive on to different boards. When booting up on my Via board it sometimes 'clicks' whilst booting up and once into Windows, it is slugish. Sometimes it shall operate normally.

Testing
-------

System Board 1: Via EPIA-M (Master)
System Board 2: Abit NF7 (Slave)

When plugged into the Via, the test (PowerMax) fails on 'SMART threshold check'. However, when plugged into the Abit, the test does not do a 'SMART threshold check' and thus sees the drive as normal.

I have not tried booting up on the Abit as I am sure Windows wont have the right drivers for the board - the last thing I want to do is to keep installing and reinstalling drivers.

I would update the Via BIOS but have read that people have tried to update but it has killed the board and then they have to RMA - so I am not risking that.

I have tried different cables but I end up with same results.

When booting up the BIOS does not give any SMART errors either.

So is it the VIA board which is the problem, or the hard drive?
Why does it not do the 'SMART threshold check' on the Abit?

Thank you in advance.
