thinking about getting my dad a new phone for xmas
wondering if £100 would get a decent phone ? (or less!!)
think he would only really use the internet (3G) on it sometimes, doesn't really need loads of features, a decent camera would be nice

not really sure what £100 would get

does this list seem reasonable ? http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...heap-smartphones-payg-mobiles-compared-961975

never know whether to trust these 'top 10' lists

if i could find a lumia 520 for £70 I'd go for that, dunno where they got that price from though

what's the main thing that makes these phones £4-500 less than iphones etc ?

CPW.

well, they don't have the latest technology (SoC, screen etc.) and features, but they're still capable handsets. Iphones always have a price premium on the top.

yeah, it's just such a huge leap
he saw an Iphone4s and was impressed with it, not wanting to get one of the above that turns out to be clunky and slow in comparison...

he's on O2 btw, I take it the vodaphone, virgin and orange PAYG's will be locked

CPW phones are unlocked. they just give you a SIM of your choice + required top up on it.

if you do PAYG upgrade on eligible SIM, you don't have to do the top up.

O2 for some strange reason has their phones more expensive on PAYG upgrades, when I bought my 520, I paid £80 on Virgin, as O2 was £90.

ahh I see, gonna have to steal his phone for a bit to get the sim number! hopefully they don't send any texts about new phones until he gets it as xmas

cheers for the help :)

Except for iPhones which will lock to the network of the first SIM card inserted into it.

The current TSV on QVC is an Archos smartphone for under £100 including delivery (dual core, two SIM card slots and a 5MP camera with flash).

I know about iPhones and CPW, but given that OP's looking for a £100 phone that info is highly irrelevant.

NO! NO! NO!

With the Moto G now in stock on Tesco's website for just £89.00 with a £10 off code on HotUKdeals you would be crazy to go for that phone, it has only 512 MB of ram, you really need a minimum of 1GB for android and it has a smaller lower resolution screen and only dual core, go for the Moto G its way superior OP.

well, it isn't really. it's fast, smooth and stable, but...

the thing is, if it's for your old man, that only uses calls, maybe messages and odd browsing, WP8 is fine. Once you start getting more active, it becomes more frustrating, as there just aren't the apps. there isn't a decent web browser on WP8 for example. or a music player...or...

why 520 all day long ?
one last question about the Moto G and 520 - which one has better battery life ?

I'm 90% going to go for the Moto G (doubt my dad will use apps much but there may be a few that will interest him, so nice to have the option)
