First of all i have never honestly owned a mobile other than one a few years ago (Sony Eriksson with their camera phones back in the last decade), which i never really used so got chucked.

But why...are they getting so large?

Why do people want this, surely its rather difficult to use unless you have massive hands?

Simply as a bigger screen is nicer to view things on. Phones are being increasingly used for different forms of media consumption, and a larger screen makes that a more pleasant experience.

Unless you go for something like a Galaxy Note, or other 5.5 inch or larger screen, then they're still easy to use in one hand. Even people with small hands like me can use a 5 inch screen easily enough in one hand.

You can still get old style phones with buttons if you just want to make calls and send texts.

A slightly more modern equivalent of your previous phone is probably under £10 now - eg you can get a Samsung or Nokia from Tesco for £7 :)

Uhh, not quite what i was saying, I'm fine with the smaller smartphones.

Surely it makes you look rather stupid holding, say the Xperia Z ultra to your face to take a call?

Who cares, especially when for many of us, phone calls are a must but a tiny fraction of what a smartphone is for. My phone is used far more for media consumption than as a phone.
Saying that i don't have a big phone as i hate big things in my pocket. Although i am so tempted to see if i can get along with the lumia 1520, but i doubt it.
The bigger screen would be so good for movie/youtube watching and internet browsing. Its just the pocket thing, thats kept me away from big phones.

That's not really a great example though, as it's at the absolute top end of size (>6 inch screen!), and has sound a minuscule amount compared with the more popular 5 inch (and around there) sized phones. That's not the sort of phone size that most people are buying.

The five inch phones are still completely usable for most people in one hand, but obviously the really large phones, such as the one you mentioned, go past that limit.

I suppose so, I never really got into the whole furore of devices on the go, though since i travel for hours on a bus every week, it is starting to look rather useful.

I guess what im asking is that, why get a phablet when you can get a cellular tablet, if you really wanted a bigger screen?

This. I hardly call so I don't mind a phone that's quite big, as long as I can still use it with one hand (5> inch, phablets are too big for me :p). It's nice when travelling for multimedia usages and access the net to check emails, timetables and notes, makes managing my student life easier. So I hardly use the phone... as a phone, but more of a device to keep me on track of things. The larger screen helps with this sort of stuff, so I don't mind the screen being "large".

Because some people prefer an all in one device. And a large device like the Note 3 has top end specs and a large battery to boot.

There are nearly 7bn people in the World, so naturally people's view on an ideal phone will differ.
