Hi guys just a quick couple of Q's! My mums boyfriend has dropped his new lap top on our tiled kitchen floor so the screen has completely smashed! But it still powers up and the tiny bits of the screen that haven't smashed just display multi couloured artifacts which leads me to believe the graphics card has gone bye bye! So what i would like to know is where is the best place to get the screen repaired and a new graphics adaptor fitted? I know theres no competitors allowed but give us a clue :)

Thanks :p

the graphics should be ok, the artifacts are what happens when a tft breaks, try it on an external to make sure, i would take the screen out and source one from the net, if you dont fancy swapping it there are plenty of laptop repairers out there get some prices and take your pick

It may help if you tell us what laptop it is. As for graphics adaptors, these are mostly built into the laptop so you wouldn't be able to replace it.

You might be lucky, its not a huge job to replace a screen, but it does take a little time.

Tried a spare tft but it doesn't wanna know! Once plugged in the screen comes up with "Auto reajusting" then nothing! If you press any buttons on the monitor it comes up with "In power save mode, press any button on the keyboard to continue"... still nothing!

Specs are as follows:
Toshiba Equium A100-027
Dual Core T2060
1 Gig RAM
Vista Home Premium 32bit
15" WXGA tft screen

No mention of the graphics card though :s

Have you set the laptop to send the display signal to the external monitor? Usually this is done by pressing the Fn key together with one of the F1 to F12 keys (the one with a monitor icon on it).

Also make sure the external monitor is capable of displaying the video resolution that the laptop is currently set at.

Hope this helps

As it is an Equium it would have been bought from a well known retailer. Did he buy one of the stores own warranty policies at the same time? If so check the policy as some include accidental cover and then follow the policy instructions to get it fixed.

If not, as already suggested check your household policy in case you can claim on that.

Failing all that it is going to be a chargeable repair and until it is inspected and the full extent of all the damage assessed it would be difficult to guess how much it will cost. If you call Toshiba directly they will arrange for it to be picked up and assesed. You either then pay the estimate or £35.25 to get it back unrepaired (or just authorise them to dispose it if beyond economical repair) but do check the insurance options before doing all this.

Good luck.
