So this happened at the weekend:

http://213.230.211.135/imag0816.jpg

My beloved 120Hz Samsung S23A750D toppled forward onto the desk and I watched almost 380 english pounds evaporate before my eyes. Cue a lot of swearing and annoyance at myself, but now I am zen and want to find out if anyone has any ideas.

Clearly I'm not looking for any kind of officially sanctioned fix, but I wonder if it's possible for example to replace just the panel? Or would Samsung pick it up to fix and put in their refurb stock?

My next step is simply to throw it in the bin, but my inner geek can't bear to see 90% working electronics cast asunder.

perspex screen cover and air bag
:D

LOVED:
120Hz refresh rate - silky smooth in windows and games!
Very slim bezels / thin design - looked great on the desk

MEH:
3D - don't use it on my TV, didn't use it on my PC
23" - although it sat sandwiched between two other 23" panels, I often pulled it forward for FPS gaming so it filled a larger field of vision - maybe a 27" size would be better
16:9 aspect - love the look of the new super wide monitors coming out but can't see any with >60Hz
1080p - resolution was fine and matches the others, but 4K...mmmm. Running a 780GTX 3GB at the moment.

For the budget (if it's the 220 you mentioned above), checked out the BenQ XL2411T Rev2.0 24" TRUE 144Hz?

I can't compare it to more expensive monitors as it's the most money I've shelled out on a screen! But It's good fun for gaming and seems to be well built. The only thing I greatly dislike is the UI which is shockingly clunky.

AOC 2963 might float yer boat mate ive got one coming they are £275-£285 online and overclock to 75hz over 60hz some say they notice the 15fps but it would be smoother than 60hz and you get ultrawide format as well. It will be semi matte/gloss and not fully as shiny as the Samsung but the colors will be better and you can adjust overdrive in the OSD.

It is not going to be 120hz smooth because thats a huge difference in motion, For example a bluray movie will be 24 frames per second enough for clear motion. So you can imagine how huge an extra 60fps (120hz) or even 15fps will make.

I reckon you have dislodged one of the internal cables, if you open the case you will probably find that the ribbon has come partly lose hence why your screen looks the way it does. Should be a fairly simple fix.

I would say 1400p. I love my Dell 2713hm and the quality and vibrance is excellent. Moving from 1080p to 1400p is the best graphical upgrade I made in last 5 years graphics cards included. One 780 wont cut it at 4k though as I have 2 of them to max out games at 1400p

Ouch you didn't wanna do that mate, I feel your pain, but if your getting it covered on your household insurance, then surely there's no harm in opening up the damaged monitor and taking a look to see if there's anything obvious that might be the problem. If it's just the case of a loose cable and you can fix it for free, then awesome, you'll have your monitor back up and running at 100%.

I've had said it's smashed. The curved bit of the distortion on the right hand side gives it away. If it was a cable it would be a straight line.

Saying that, there's still no harm in taking it apart and having a peak inside :)

While I love my 27" 1440p Dell, after 120hz you may find it a tad slow moving to ips. Still, the colours and definition are really wonderful for "pretty" games. Would be easily powered by your gpu unlike 4k.

Otherwise, get yourself another fast refresh rate monitor if you mainly play fps games online.
