So I was driving back from Twickenham this evening at around 11.30, and while I was driving 4 guys ran across the road. I swerved and almost hit a bus on the next lane, i was pretty shook.
I put the passenger window down and said to the guys are you mad i could have killed you! They call me a **** and tell me to **** off. While this happened 1 of the guys goes around my car and tries to open my drivers door but I saw in time and locked it. He then smashed my window with his elbow.

Being on Twickenham High Street there was a police station 30m away! So drove straight thre and told the police. The guy was arrested and has to pay for my window

So a **** night, but how much will a window cost?

Cost as much as the insurance excess I expect

Any glass go in your eyes or face?

I'd want to try and get him done for some form of assault too. Stupid idiot

Well that's a bit mad, at least the guy got caught. If you have windscreen cover, other windows are sometimes included and you only have to pay the excess (£60 or so).

Smashed it with his elbow!!

Did he have a hammer up his sleeve as it's hard enough to smash a window with a hammer let alone an elbow!!

Did he not run off when you went into the police station or did they not come after you?..

Sorry was a Peugeot 307.

Nothing on my hands and face, the police checked that out just in case.
The police gave me an option last night whether I want to press charges or as he's offered to pay settle it that way. I'm tempted for the latter just make it simpler I think.

I'll take a picture of all the glass later

No, dont go through insurance - he should have to pay full price! It doesn't normally affect premiums but some insurers do ask you to declare windscreen claims. It'll be a couple of hundred quid I'd expect

It seems odd they didn't run off when you went to the police. But anyway, assuming it happened as described then if it were me I would press charges and then take him to a small claims court to recover the windo replacement cost. Best of both worlds. If you don't press charges then I doubt he would pay up.

They did try and walk away, but the police found them

Some random guy punched my mate's windscreen and cracked it. He was charged in court to pay for the damages, my mate never saw a penny. No body seemed to care when he tried to chase it up

I've had a rear window replaced on my windscreen cover through insurance before - call them and ask if the sides are covered.....do not tell them its through vandalism though, say it happened on the motorway or something similar. This will have little impact on your premium if any.

Alternatively get it sorted and chase through small claims but tbh id just either sort it myself or go througg insurance as its pretty unlikely you'll ever see a penny of it.

If your handy you could do it yourself too, getting the old glass out will be the most difficult part. That is assuming you have a relatively common car where doors are easy / cheap to come by of course

Claim for the smashed glass.
Claim for small bits of glass in your eye.
Claim for the new set of tyres you need from swerving out the way of them.
Claim for how the whole incident has left you mentally scared and can no longer drive at night.
Claim for how the shock from the window smashing has also damaged the clutch/gearbox/engine and you now need a new car.
Claim for how the whole incident has brought back repressed childhood memories of your crazed uncle that tried to kill you via smashing your elbows through windows.

You sir, are a Millionaire.

Even though it seems like a lot of effort, I would press charges, why not? He's gone out of his way to vandalise your car and make you feel like **** about it.

Destroy him.

I'd press charges out of principle. Why let idiots like this get away with their actions just because they have had a drink?
