got my first apple computer yersterday, a macbook, and im liking it so far. Im transfering files from my xp machine to the macbook over samba at the mo but its going very slowly.

ive turned ipv6 off on both machines but to no avail. anyone got any ideas?

I had the same issue - have you checked the write rates of the HDs?

Is the macbook drive a 5400rpm drive? Then I'd expect it to be a little slower being a laptop drive.

15 mins for 40MB. That's 2.6MB/minute or just over 40KB/sec. I get better data rates over a mobile phone connection.

Definately not a hard drive problem. Modern 5400rpm laptop drive is good for 40MB+/sec, 100Mb Ethernet is around 8-10MB/sec on a good day.

Share the files on your PC with Shared folders and then connect to your PC with the mac using this handy guide

I used it to copy files over from mac to windows and as a rough estimate a 700mb took about 10mins to copy over wireless. Im assuming it works the same windwos -> mac (theres a lot of comments in that link to read if you get stuck.)

Ok, my mental maths isn't great at this time of night!

I had the same problem from my MBP via SMB to my SuSE RAID5 array. I found it was quicker to run SMB server on the MBP, log into the SuSE box using VNC and then access the MBP itself from the linux box using VNC..

Same operation but swapped the client/server roles if you follow me.
