Smell on wet crockery from fresh air

Yeah dryness seems to contribute to it. This is why once the dishwasher is open we try and unload it straight away so crockery doesn't stay near any residual water.

Do you wipe it over with a damp towel once its done? Should be air dried for minimum contamination, but sounds like the dishwasher has a dirty filter or plumbing honestly

It's not the dishwasher.
Hand washed some dishes whilst the bi-folds were open and left on the rack to dry. Almost immediately had a wet dog smell.

The plumbing to this sink is all new so it's just the house inlet that's pre existing. This is something I and other family members have experienced in other houses.

Tbh I don't think this is an appliance issue I think it might just be a reaction between water, air and certain materials.

A weird one but hopefully others have experienced this and know why it happens.

Whenever I wash dishes or take them out of the dishwasher when outer doors/windows with fresh air circulating a weird smell, which I can only describe as wet dog comes from them. Is this a known thing? Why does it happen?
I'm not sure if I'm doing something that makes this more prevalent such as the cleaning products I use. Or perhaps lack of rinsaid... Who knows.
.
Clean your dishwasher filter and ubend

We have the same/very similar issue. Although we describe it as an eggy sort of smell(no, its not me!). Even had a new dishwasher and still get smelly plates and glasses. It comes and goes, some days worse than others.
We've tried cleaning with white vinegar, also switched the dishwasher tablets to some organic ones, which seemed to work for a while but now nothing works.
The kids have plastic plates and it doesn't seem to affect those so tempted to just get some plastic dinner plates :D

U Bend or are your pots unglazed?

eggy sounds more like a drain smell

maybe you're just describing it as wet dog for some reason

I used to describe anything that was smoked as 'smoked salmon' until someone pointed out it was just a 'smoked' smell, probably because of hating smoked salmon/bad experience :p

I realise given the above I'm prob not the best to be commenting on smells!

I'll leave it as this as I feel like various details I've mentioned have been missed.
The crockery smells when exposed to fresh air when it's wet.

It doesn't matter where it got wet and I'm not smelling anything coming from anywhere else as when I sniff the plate the smell comes directly from it.

It doesn't seem to be a known thing, so I'll leave it at that.

Thanks for the opinions.

Someone I know has long covid and one of the symptoms is that everything smell's and tastes of sewage. On the upside she has lost a load of weight.

I know exactly what you mean OP. Before we got our dishwasher, the dishes, glasses etc would occasionally smell terrible, with the same wet dog smell you describe.
I read that it is bacteria that causes the smell but a quick solution was to pour boiling water over it all. That plus the steam would eliminate it immediately.

I've got a glass that smells a bit wet dog when I take it out of the dishwasher, but I've never been able to figure out why. Doesn't seem to affect anything else.

No idea if there’s a connection, but we used to notice a nasty smell emanating from the glass washing machine in a local pub if we were standing at the bar near it when it was opened after a cycle.
Even the guv’nor’s wife commented on it, but she would wait for a glass to cool down, then put a brandy in it and knock it back, saying, “Tastes good to me, anyone want a freebie to check?”
There was no shortage of takers, so the glasses must have been okay.

We get this from time to time and it's not only when washed in a dishwasher (because we don't have one any more). I quite often mention to my wife that some plate or other has a funny smell. I wouldn't describe it as 'wet dog' but it's definitely an unusual whiff.

She can't smell it.

Glad to report I have never experienced this, nor have I heard from anyone else the dishes stink! Quite bizarre, I'd be replacing everything tbh, it can't be "normal"

not experienced this before but are you removing the dishes straight away once the jobby is done? Not the same thing but happens when i 'forget' to take clothes out the washing machine and they end up smelling of wet dog because they have been left enclosed in the machine for a long time

As there’s only my wife and I at home, the dishwasher only goes on every 2 or 3 days, but I wash the detritus off everything before I put stuff in it.
I’ll put it on around 9.00 p.m., turn it off when the signal pipes up at the end of the cycle, then unload it the following a.m. when everything is dry, never had any smells.

I know this thread is 'old', but I was googling for anyone else who had issues with plates smelling bad after the dishwasher/hand washing. This is the second post I have found that mentions Denby plates. I never had any issues whatsoever with plates smelling bad until i bought new Denby plates to add to ones I have had for around 9 years. I then assumed my 6 year old dishwasher was the problem but then I got new kitchen, dishwasher etc. and the problem persists. Wosrt of all it's not only when using the dishwasher, it's also when hand washing plates etc. But it's only ever the Denby items that smell. Dishwasher is clean with zero smell emanating from it, drains all clean, new plumbing. I have tried changing dishwasher detergent, washing up liquid to no avail. But after emptying the dishwasher this morning and finding that only one of the items in the washer smelled bad, I decided to do a little experimenting. I filled the dishwasher with non-denby items and amazingly NOTHING smells at all. I am now currently waiting for a dishwasher filled with Denby plates, bowls, mugs etc to see if any of them smell.

I was wondering if you solved your problem and also how long you have had your Denby plates? This is driving me mad, as I cannot figure out what is going on and I know it's not my dishwasher/sink/cloths/tea-towel cleanliness to blame!
