Had this problem a while ago but it seemed to solve it all by itself, now it's back again, basically the plates smell like wet dog after the cycle is complete, I've cleaned the trap out but it's made no difference.

Would it be worth running an empty cycle with some bleech thrown in?

Yeah, don't use bleach - it'll bubble up and spill over your kitchen floor.

Source: my boss, at a previous workplace, tried fairy liquid, when there were no dishwasher tablets left. Bleach isn't quite so bubbly, but I would expect a similar result.

after every use leave the door open just a bit, i mind reading in the manual of mine they advise this to stop it smelling too.

always use the longest most hard wash you can. it's not just to scrub pots and pans but will help clean the machine. even if i stick a small load in i still stick it on for the full 3 hour wash.

i put fairy liquid in with every finish dishwasher tablet. i put it in the pre wash compartment which doesn't fit a tab.

it's all about quantity used. i use a small amount and it's fine. if you use a lot then yes bubbles everywhere pouring out the machine and all over the floor.

Cheap bottle of sprit vinegar and once through the hot cycle (or hot clean if it has one).
Our dishwasher gets it a couple of times a year.

Never shut the door wholly other than when washing, otherwise water never evaporates and it just sits there with bacteria growing in a nasty biofilm.
