Smokers

Never saw the sense in smoking. Who hear's that something is bad for your health and thinks, "Yeah I'll give that a go", and after experiencing how crap it is the first time do it again, and again then again and yet again.

It's something I'll never be able to get my head around.

Me too. Even though I did it. I coughed my guts up first time. But carried on as all my mates were doing it and I wanted to fit in. Teens at my school were so shallow that they wouldn't let you hang around with them unless you smoked.

Looking back, I wish I'd have realised they were a bunch of prats and followed my own path.

Vaping's scary. It needs to be regulated properly, given we don't know what's happening when loads of the ingredients used get heated up... and that stuff's then being inhaled :-\.

Or you could read a couple of decent articles by people who actually do test the effects of these ingredients, and come to the complete opposite conclusion...

You really are an idiot if you start smoking these days. You are effectively paying to kill yourself, so pointless.

Well, that and the NHS.

As net contributors to the NHS coffers, I thank all smokers for my next colonoscopy, I'll be thinking of you.

As do I. I thank myself daily for pre-paying for my future treatments.

Despite all the whiners about the cost of smokers on the NHS... it'd probably surprise you to find out just how many NHS staff members smoke like chimneys - Almost every single nurse I worked with across several NHS trusts was a heavy smoker!!

Not at all. But then the £2Bn cost to the NHS for treating smoking related illness yearly is far outweighed by the £13Bn tax take from tobacco.

For the record though, I gave up smoking 2 years ago, and started vaping (hence the first quote / reply. Never felt better. I was a short termer though. Was only on 20-30 a day for about 18 years.

Smoked from 15 to 25 so a ten year stretch. Been free for 4 years now. You don't see many smokers these days that for sure. Makes you wonder what brands like Marlboro will be up to in 50 years time?

I bought a pack of fags the day I found out didn't have cancer, after 4 years smoke free, I cannot believe how bloody disgusting it was, never touched one again.

This thread seems very much an in or out topic (no criticism either way)

Have smoked since college in 2003, started because of "recreational use". Have given up a couple of times but extreme stress brought it back on.

Have definitely considered giving up again recently but I've got a feeling that my next stress free period is about december this year (that would be the best time to give it another go) and the next intense stress period starts about February.

Yes the worst decision I ever made but as every smoker knows, the next one is your last one....

e: "recreational use" was just at college, not adult life

Try ecigs. Easier than going cold turkey for sure. I just switched over straight away from a 20 a day habit. Never felt the need to go back since.

Started when I was 15 ish. Smoked 20 a day from the age of 16 till I gave up in September last year, which was pretty much bang on 10 years. Mum smoked, Dad smoked (they also quit last year), first proper girlfriend smoked and a bunch of friends, just started and that was it.

The reason I quit was because I could feel the effects it was having on my health, I was having difficulties breathing properly (at rest, let alone when active) and all the normal side effects smoking brings. Woke up one day and just thought enough is enough so I went cold turkey.

Ow and the price of smoking was another motivational point for quitting.

Started when i was 14 when back then it was cool to smoke & everybody else did it or tried it back in the early 90's, I've packed in a couple of times over the years just by going cold turkey, but always started again for one reason or another.

I'm now 39 and now feeling the effects of what smoking is doing to me mainly breathing, so now while there is still time before any permanent damage is done I'm going to pack in for good.

Also cost is another factor I'm spending around £17 per day on cigs, I don't smoke 40 a day but don't like to run out hence why i always buy 40 when i go to the shops, that money I spend on cigs can be put to much better use.

I think this day & age kids are more sensible and more aware of the dangers of smoking none of the younger members of my family smoke or have they ever tried it, the only kids you see smoking these days are those that are from a under privileged background mostly.

My girlfriend also smokes she same age of me and between us we are spending over £300 a month on cigs, she says it hard for her to pack in because her job as a Manager is to stressful, so trying to push her to go onto ecigs while I shall try and go cold turkey again next week.

I've mentioned that the money we save every month by not smoking could buy us a new fitted kitchen within 3 to 4 months, so the incentive is there to pack in as we aim for something nice with the money we save.

Started around 18 gave up at 26 (about a year ago). Don't feel any healthier when i'm blowing at the gym also don't see the money saved. It's all a con i tell you :D

Quit smoking about ten years - about 7 years ago now....

I hate preachy reformed smokers/vapers and loudly whining nonsmokers more than any normal smoker.

The GF is a loudly whining non smoker that makes fake coughing noises and air clearing gestures if she even gets a wiff off a guy walking buy. Does make my eyes roll.

Get over it people... If its persistent then ask politely if they realise and 99% of the time you'll get a sorry/embarrassment and a smoker will move somewhere "downwind"

Same as a few people in here, started when i was 11-12, occasionally stealing the odd couple from my mum, or tapping off my friends. Was pretty much full time smoking between 16-27, either 10 a day or a 12.5g tobacco box every 3 days. Switched to Vaping almost 2 years ago and generally only buy real smokes when a battery dies & i'm waiting on a replacement

Had my first puff when I was around thirteen. Started when I was seventeen and then finally stopped thirteen years later. Been clean ever since.

Never got smoking until I tried cannabis aged 19. Spent the next fifteen years addicted to nicotine - something that never would have happened if we didn't have a cannabis culture where people rolled joints mixed with tobacco.

I broke the addiction a few years back, was very easy once I adopted the right mindset.

These days I smoke cannabis when I choose to... I will never put nicotine in my system as long as I live (granted, probably not that long considering how much I used to smoke!).

I consider myself a victim of the war on drugs.

Gave up in May 2012 after about 10 years or so of smoking. Would never go back but I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it at the time. Got fed up with smelling like an ash tray, wasting money and slowly killing myself. If there was a healthy way to smoke I would probably start that lol.

I have a smoke or two after work and when I drink but I'm slowly cutting it out. I also couldn't care less about non smokers choosing to stand next to me and then giving me daggers. I'm not an inconsiderate person and will always move to accommodate people standing in my filthy smell but every now and then you get some holier-than-though schmuck who will stand next to you seemingly for no other purpose than to have a little whinge.

Just recently I was standing outside a pub having a smoke when this chick comes out on the phone. Doesn't look at me, doesn't glance at me, nothing. I might as well have not been standing there. She gets off the phine and starts telling me how inconsiderate I am for smoking there. When I pointed out that I was there first and that it wasn't affecting anyone until she got there and that there was quite literally an entire field to stand on, she started getting angry (proper chavvy type) so I just walked inside again. Her BF gave me daggers too for some reason.

Weirdos.
