watchin scrubs.
I tried out some smoke shots earlier, after seeing Mr Jones entry in this months comp, I'd been meaning to try this ages ago but forgot all about doing it.

Really good fun, and very therapeutic watching the smoke :)

More here

Setup below, matt black card and SB600 pointing up, 1/64 power (obviously the cable was attached to my camera), and using extra card to help direct the light up into the smoke, but without lighting the background ;) Exif's are there for camera settings.

I really like the abstract nature of the shots, the shapes created and seeing images within the image.

Fourth one reminds me of the one in Fringe

Nice shots, nice to see your setup in the last pic also.

Would shots like this be possible with onboard flash or is an external flash a necessity?

I haven't tried it yet and could well be wrong here but I think the flash position is key here and an onboard flash would highlight the background. I'm guessing thats what the small piece of card at the front is for, to try and keep as much light of the background as possible. I'm no sure how you could achieve this with an onboard flash.

Lighting is key, you could maybe use the onboard flash if you made a snoot thingy, im thinking a couple of cardboard tubes (kitchen roll tubes) ??

@ Mr Jones, was your setup similar to mine?

Here's my setup

Black matt card on the back and a snoot + cut out on the card 'box' to direct light down without lighting the background. The focus is set for the incense so the smoke comes out pretty sharp at f8.0. I used a telephoto lens to minimise distortion and keep my lens a fair distance away from the smoke and triggered wirelessly at 1/64 power.
