problem was - escort with sticking caliper.

parts bought -

new caliper
new brake hose

took off -
hose
then caliper

problems -
snapped caliper bolt

the bolt i've snapped has snapped flush in the hole in the caliper carrier. :(

so a) i need a new bolt and b) i need to get the old one out.

if i asked someone to get it out how much should i expect to pay? just wondering whether its gonna be cheaper to do it myself.

the problem is it would seem is not the caliper piston being seized....

but rather a problem with the hose. i took the caliper off the other day (which only adds to the confusion as to why the bolt snapped!) and it took me 2 G clamps to push the piston back in.

take the hose off - and i can push the piston back with my fingers!!! so hose must have collapsed inside or something??

any advice on what to do should i have to do it myself?

Drill the bolt out would be my suggestion.

Use a tap and die and make sure your dead on the middle.

Or work up drill bit sizes and it might lose all its strength and break inwards.

Can you get molegrips or anything on it?

Find a scrappers and steal/buy a replacement carrier, only cost you a few quid and save hours of messing about.....

scrappers are normally complete rip-offs nowadays though. :(

Id try to drill it out then, if you have a pillar drill then that would be your best bet but its not that easy to be honest.

Try and pinch one from a scrappers would be my advice, lot of them are rip of merchants now i agree!

Definitely go to a scrappy and get a complete caliper and carrier - those bolts (the one you've snapped) are only available from Ford as a kit and last time I priced them I think they were something like £17 a side.

bugger. not what i wanted to hear.

suppose the only good thing is the fact that i could return the caliper as it doesnt look like its going to be needed. :(

When I first did the pads on a Mondeo I cross threaded one of those special bolts - mashed it to bits and it mashed the thread in the carrier too (they're very soft and easy to strip)

I bought a caliper complete with carrier for £15 from a scrapyard at the time and changed the whole shebang.

ok, good news... i have brakes that work equally now. so panic over...

managed to get a carrier, caliper and pads from a breakers for £20 so not too bad. replaced the hose properly and then put it all back on and bled it up. still has air in the system but it works ok for now. tomorrow when i have more time i can run some more fluid through it and try to get the air out.

got a feeling i'll be bleeding all 4 nipples but i hope not.

ended up taking the new caliper back so got my money back on that so total fix cost me £35 which was for the new hose and carrier/caliper setup.

amazing that it's something in the hose that was locking the brake on though. i'd heard it was possible for them to collapse/break up inside so i guess this was a classic case as i'm still using my caliper. :)
