I went out in my W Reg Mondeo 2.0 Ghia with traction control and I never had any problems with getting around with the snow on the hills where I live. It was great for the tricky parts of hills and stuff, but also it was fun in car parks to turn it off and let the wheels spin and slide about a bit.
Also I found ABS to be good in the snow, as I stopped in a straight line and didn't find myself going to a kerb as I could still steer the car away. The thing to remember with ABS is that it will not make stopping distance drastically shorter than conventional brakes in most conditions, it allows the driver to steer and keep control of the car, especially at higher speeds.
And while ABS will increase stopping distance on loose gravel and snow compared to conventional brakes "digging in" to cause a plough effect, if you find yourself not stopping in time with ABS or without, then you are still travelling 2 fast to 2 near to a car/kerb and won't stop anyway. As on the snow I only had it kick in three times and I alway stopped in plenty of time.
