Snow Leopard

Just remember it doesn't include iLife so you need to use a time machine backup, your original disk or a copy of iLife to reinstall it. Apple also does a box set with iWork, iLife and Snow Leopard for £132.

Are you saying, that if want to do a clean install, I need iLife.:confused:

I have a brand new copy of snow leopard which is unused. Mail me if you want to and we can talk about it.
You can use it with a clean install.

Thanks for the info and offer, I went and ordered it this morning.

IS the OS not free when you buy a machine then you can get updates for free? I am learning the Apple Mac world as I just have got a Mackbook Pro.

You get the point upgrades for free e.g. 10.5.1, 10.5.2, 10.5.3 but if you want 10.6 (Snow Leopard) you have to pay for the upgrade or buy a new Mac with it pre-installed.

As far as I know the only time you qualify for a free upgrade is if you buy a Mac in the months before a major new OS release.

Only if you do not have the original install disks that came with your Mac. If you perform a clean install (format and reinstall) then iLife is no longer on your Mac as it is NOT included on the Snow Leopard disk. You either need to restore from a backup or reinstall from the original disks (see below) or buy a copy of iLife.

From this article on clean installing Snow Leopard;

Note: You will no longer have iLife on your computer. However, you can use the same discs that came with your computer to install iLife. Eject Snow Leopard, and insert the first disc that came with your computer. It should say something like Macbook Install Disc: 1. After Snow Leopard automatically detects the disc and opens the window, you will see an option to install bundled applications only. Double click this icon, type in your password and let it install. Half way through, it will ask you to insert the 2nd disc to continue. Insert the 2nd disc that came with your computer and let the installation finish.

There is also an Apple article about the topic here if you have a newer Mac where the two disks are formatted somewhat differently.
