So, anyone got an iRobot Roomba or other robot vacuum cleaner?

Is the Roomba effective on carpet or best suited for non carpet surfaces?

Not good on thick or shag pile carpets... best to shake those outside and pick them up before Roomba runs.

What versions of the Roomba do people have? Any particular model the best bang for the buck?

650 is the best value model of the lineup imo. However the Neato XV is also great value and has more features.

Weird thing is that in mainland EU the Roombas are much cheaper... where I live it costs £146, in Germany it costs £260, and in the UK it costs £340! That is a mind-bogglingly huge price discrepancy, and I can't for the life of me understand it.

Cant believe how much these cost though!

It's all relative. Keeping my apartment floor clean while I barely lift a finger is worth it. I run it twice a week, and parts are cheap and battery cheaply replaced, so it works out at great value in the long run imo.

Wish I hadn't seen this thread. Moving into my first owned flat in a couple of weeks and like others on here, single guy, hate cleaning and now I see these.

Looking at the irobot site the price varies by about £400 across the range. How are they all different, just suction power or bigger batteries?

Amazon sell them too, not always cheaper but mine was at the time.

Anyone bought a Braava? I have a few hard floors (kitchen, and two bathrooms). Would love to be able to set a robot off to clean the hard floors too after Roomba is done vacuuming! :D

Meet the new member of my robot family, R2

I got him, a Roomba 760, in nearly new condition for £140, not a bad deal at all!

My old roomba is now a permanent resident in my bedroom, while the new one has now taken over cleaning the main apartment. :)

Dragging this thread up. Been considering a robot vacuum for years now but held off. But now the Dyson 360 eye is out. Looks pretty amazing. But expensive. Anyone considering it?

Meant to be good but sits higher than Roombas and their equivalents so means it won't fit under a a lot of softs/furniture. Worth considering if you have legged furniture.

Yeah, shouldn't be a problem for me as not got much I'd need it to go under. Price tag is bit wild though. If it drops to 500 I think I'll grab one.

Well, I have been looking at upgrading R2D2 (Roomba 650) and C3P0 (Roomba 770) for a single solution that intelligently maps the apartment and returns to the charger before returning to the cleaning, a la Roomba 980, and I have come across some interesting stuff.

Xiaomi, a highly respected Chinese electronics manafacturer known for releasing very technically advanced products for low prices, have released their own vacuum bot, the Xiaomi Mi (also called Xiaomi Mijia).

Youtube comparison vs Roomba 980

It seems to have most of the functions of the Roomba 980, in fact it has a higher suction rating and a battery around 1.5x more powerful, for half the price! 30% smaller bin, but this shouldn't be a problem with regular cleaning.

Also, everything is currently only in Chinese so need s Youtube video to translate, but once setup it's a no-brainer.

It can be bought here https://www.tvc-mall.com/details/xi...er-household-sweeping-robot-sku84990099a.html and here http://www.gearbest.com/robot-vacuum/pp_440546.html?wid=21

The only place to buy seems to be wholesale from China, and price to UK seems to be around £350 or so including taxes. I may well take a punt. :)

I bought the Xiaomi Mi robot back in November and its a fantastic piece of kit.

The previous robot vacuum I had was a Roomba 650 so obviously this is an improvement as the 650 doesn't have any mapping features.

The navigation on this thing is extremely efficient. It breaks any large room into smaller chunks and will clean around the perimeter of said chunks before cleaning the area inside in a parallel series of lines. My main frustration with the 650 was with it getting stuck within the four legs of a chair but this thing gets in and out with absolutely zero problems.

The biggest gripe most reviews have with this bot is the Chinese plugin for the Xiaomi Smart home application but on Android, a translated version of the plugin can be installed through ADB backup without the need for root. You can also use Wireshark to sniff out the UDP packets being sent over the local network to send commands to the bot and these can be used to control it through a home automation platform.
