So back story.
Currently an apprentice and on a very low wage, kinda been forced to move out the last two years and have been scraping by in shared accommodation.
I have spent the last four years working my arse off, in the first year I had two jobs and was totalling 70+ hours a week in work. I am working hard in every aspect of the apprenticeship, getting the highest grades in college, course and excellent reviews from my department engineers.

Current problem.
The position of going onto shift has arisen, its 6 am to 6 pm days and nights and is an extra 30% pay every month, something that would help me greatly, i could probably rent my own place and afford to actually socialise (something i haven't done since starting) but low and behold instead of giving the chance to me it's gone to the laziest prat imaginable, he spends the entire day playing on his phone or sleeping. No one in work is booking his holidays so he's had 60 so far this year and he copies everyone else work in college. He pays no rent and has no out goings bar fuel because of his parent.

I cannot for the life of me see why he was picked over me, It feels like all the hard work I have done over the last four years is for naught, it just feels like a kick in the teeth and I have a right mind to go into work tomorrow and do absolutely **** all, sit in the corner playing on my phone not giving two **** about the plant.

I'm all ready struggling to pay bills, my last amount of saving were wiped out when the car need work to get through it MOT, starting to feel life really isn't fair.

Sometimes (despite what people say), no matter how hard you work you won't get the break you were looking for. It's not because you don't deserve it, it's just that life isn't fair and people don't always get ahead on merit. This doesn't mean you should throw it in and start slacking off, because next time a position comes up you want to make sure you've given yourself the best chance of getting it. You can't control how they decide to give these positions out, but you can control their perception of you.
Hope it works out for you next time.

hahah same happened to me, the useless, lazy, liar, office thief got "promoted" over me cos the boss liked to chat to him about Manga kids cartoons...

Could be that the boss likes him, could be them giving him a chance to prove himself. Could be lots of things, that's the way of the world.

Do not work hard in the hope someone else will promote or reward you with things you want, instead take those things and remove this other person entirely from the equation.

Yeah, same for me. I was a 1st-line tech, and one of the delivery drivers leap-frogged over me into 2nd-line because he was a Christian. Believers were favoured over atheists as it was a Christian company. Said guy proceeded to take 26 sick days in a 12-month period when I took 3. This created extra work for me and the then-manager. I was even made to work during holidays because of his odd sick day here and the odd sick day there. Granted I got my days back in lieu but it's the principle of it. Roll on 2 more years, and who became the next manager? 1 clue - it wasn't me.

I had the exact same thing happen to me at work. I've been building towards this role for about half a year now, whilst being told that it was mine as soon as the other guy leaves. Queue last week they tell me they're giving it to someone who's been with the company for 3 months, and that I've been training because "someone told us you might be leaving in August".

AUGUST? That's bloody 5 months away.

Don't worry it will show in the end. It's even sweeter when they get the chance and **** it up.

exactly this, you don't know what is in the pipeline as well. I was in a similar situation, somebody got promoted ahead of me in a similar circumstances, turned out they had another better role in mind for me, which was even higher than the one I had originally applied for.

Like said, that's the piece of **** called life. Nepotism/Cronyism prevails because it's human nature to prefer to choose those you have a bound with regardless of merit, if that is the case here. It's basically emotion overriding logic.

No point busting your ass if it doesn't benefit you. It's kind of defeatist to think that way but that's the society we live in. :)
