Just had two 2TB drives fail at the same time when powering back on a 16 bay SAN.

4TB of data spread over 1400 users nearly went down the pan! Granted i have it all on tape, but damn that would have taken a hell of a long time to recover!

Feeling so damn relieved now, i've even got two hot spares (now rebuilding on to those) for such a situation, first time i've been on the end of a double failure though. Just lucky they weren't a part of the same stripe.

Anyone been on the unfortunate end of the same scenario before?

I feel like i've just played hard disk russian roulette and won.

Powering back?

Sounds like a 24/7 system. Were you having issues beforehand?

It was a planned shutdown for a generator test, normally it is a 24/7 system. Water has got into our generator causing it to fail to start up :( UPS's keep everything up between gennie power up normally but we had to have everything off for a good hour or so.

We had an old Compaq server some 8-9 years ago that blew its PSU very loudly and that took all 8 disks with it. and the mobo and the.... well entire box actually.

this was the only time i have received amazing customer server from HP/Compaq. The server was 4 years out of warranty and after what started as an angry call to customer services, they resolved it by replacing the server with a new G5 (or G4 cant remember) DL 380! I did have to sign a "will not report this" document though. but well worth it.
