So did NVIDIA lie about the prices or what?

Depends on the state, but yes, if you go normal routes purchasing it's 6-9% sales tax. That said, you can normally get away without paying sales tax is you order online from a store that doesn't have a physical presence in that state e.g. if i order from Microcenter while in Ohio. Except for NY where they've increased tax and closed that loophole (but as a New Yorker, not sure why anyone would want to visit that rat-hole
)

I fully expected the price of the FE to be north of £600, as did many unfortunately. Just wait though, the proverbial poo poo is REALLY going to hit the fan when the AIB cards come in at the same price and more. The smattering of cards below that will be crappy blowers from lesser brands that are inferior to the FE in every way, but that most AIB's (the likes of Gigabyte, MSI, Asus etc) won't even want to put their name to. They will be releasing faster, cooler, quieter and better OC'ing cards and charging the moon, because Nvidia have allowed them to do this by setting the base price of the FE so high. The $599 1080 is a dream, or at least the 1080 we'd all want anyway. I am sure there will be a couple of models available at that price, just so Nvidia don't get sued for not following through on their price promise, but ultimately we've all been well and truly duped by the $599 price! It's all been a very carefully crafted game of smoke and mirrors.
I've gotta agree with this in principal, The founders edition was just an excuse for a price hike, I'm also guessing we'll get a few models with the old black 680 style blower as we've seen on a few Galax cards and the rest will all justify using the FE's price as there starting point because they're improving on it.
We are getting well and truly screwed with this move by Nvidia. Yes we get extra performance but it seems that now it isn't a case of performance dropping a level in the range making it cheaper because the price is being pushed up so the lower card costs what the last generations higher card did.
£350 minimum I reckon. Wouldn't be surprised to see ~£400.
Oh the FE? Yeah, £400+
Also, what about cards like hte Lightning Edition 1080? £999 anyone?

You have to be realistic about capitalism. Anyone who is spending over £200, let alone £500, on just a graphics card (you can buy whole laptops for that, after all) is not someone who's desperate for money... and if they are, they're daft, so logic obviously doesn't apply.
These are luxury, premium and completely unnecessary products, and bleeding edge economics apply... you charge as much as you can for as long as you can, then you drop prices a bit and try the same again. Rinse and repeat.
The $ to £ thing crops up routinely but isn't relevant because we have civilisation in the UK and an expensive healthcare system and social services network to support.

If the 1050,1060 and 1070 see similar 50% price hikes, nV will kill their sales.

isnt there some stats out which shows only 3% of all gpu sold are over £350?
Chances are those 3% will buy the £500+ cards no matter what the price is.

US MSRP is almost never a straight conversion to GBP, many factors affect this.

One of the sites is saying JPR has said that, but the only thing on the JPR website is that "enthusiast" grade went from being around 7% of sales to 15% of sales, but you have to pay $1000 to get the full report where they might go in to more detail
Nvidia and AMD refer to their top most cards as being "enthusiast" and then stuff like the 390X and 970 as high end, so there's no frame of reference for what JPR are calling "enthusiast" and whether that matches up with what the manufacturers re using

Nvidia didn't get to be in this current position by luck. They know what they are doing. The 1080 has seen a $50 price increase over the 980, I doubt anyone in the US will notice the difference who would be buying these level of cards. Inflation alone takes car e of about $20. For the average American they are probably saying another $10-12 in gas per week since the 980 release.
Circa £400 most likely. Entirely depends where it falls in terms of performance vs the 980Ti, which we don't know yet. If it ends up equal or even surpassing it in some instances, then either the 1070 will creep up towards the £450-500 mark (insane and unlikely if they want to sell any) so as to align both cards, because no way are they selling anymore 980Ti for £500 if the 1070 beats it at £400... so what's more likely IMO is that the 1070 stays around the £400 mark, and the 980Ti will drop in line. It really will depend how they compare to each other really, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out.
