so ****ed off

Why on earth didnt you just clean it up and say it was broke? is there something wrong with you? really.. some people!!

i think....THINK... they may have noticed all of the burn marks up the outside of the oven and the fact the control knobs were both melted.....

And yes, the oven door was completely open when i was using the grill

Well, it's what we did in our last place.

The landlord wanted to charge us £600 for a new lino floor because we'd spilt wax on it. After arguing our point we only had to pay £150.

Its all down to the fact your not liable for the general wear and tare of items, if the floor was put in several years before you moved in then to pay the full cost of a replacement would be reimbursing the LL for the wear and tare it suffered since being installed.

Even if the floor was brand new when you moved in you still shouldn't pay the full cost of replacement as a deduction should be made for reasonable ware and tare

You must have had the temperature whacked right up for a decent amount of time.

The flash point of cooking oil (275°C) is a lot lower than the fire-point

It would have been fat spitting up directly hitting the grill element. Combine these little flashes of flame with a layer of fat in the grill pan and your smoking.... not that I have first hand experience of this from my uni days you understand :o

I had something similar happen to me in a rented house, still there as it happens. Oven door fell apart, landlords agents tried to accuse me of negligence and subsequently charge me the full cost of a new oven. I contested the whole accusation and the landlord came to an agreement to only charge me half.

Not satisfied, as they were looking to replace the oven with a much better oven then previously installed, on the grounds that the oven broken wasn’t produced anymore, I again contested, and threatened to move into hotel accommodations on grounds of no suitable way to prepare hot food in the establishment being rented, with the landlords agents being sent my hotel bill till time when the oven had been replaced..

Oven was replaced, FOC within that same week, renewal of rental is now fast approaching, and I’m reckoning eviction notice heading me way, but darned if I was to be saddled with a bill for a new oven that broke due to age..

They do try it on, if however you’ve admitted to being at fault, they will put the onus on you to foot the replacement oven bill, and all installation charges.

Ok, the guys that came this morning to have a "look" at the oven, have just come back (the ****s let themselves in and didn't even knock), have got a new oven and fitting it right now.

I asked how much it'd be and they said they've talked to the landlord and apparently he said he'd call me about it....so i've got a nice phone call to look forward to.

I bet it'll be like:

Oven - £150
Fitting - £50
Transportation - £25
Lack of tea/coffee offered - £20
Phone calls to landlord - £15
Disposal of old oven - £30
Disposal of polystyrene new oven came in - £20
