So how does a GeCube x1600XT fit in?

Hey, been reading these forums for quite a while but only just became a mem, so hi!

I recently bought a new GeCube X1600XT 256 DDR2 for £71 delivered, and wondered if thats a fair price and what performance it gives? I've looked around and cant find much information for the 1600XT, and was previously gonna buy a x800gto for a new build im doing. So where does my new card fit into the grand scheme of things? i know its no gtx or 1900xt but i'm still hoping on some good performance against my agp (stuck currently at 4x  ) 9600XT

Hope you guys can give me some feedback! :D

It's about 20 - 50% faster than the 6600 GT. In the latest games it holds up extremely well, equalling the 6800 GT/GS in F.E.A.R and besting it in Oblivion (in the outdoors areas at least). It's also not too far off in Call of Duty 2.

cool, thanks for the info there. would have getting the same card in gddr3 made much of a difference? and the ringbus controller, would it be 256bit on both the ddr2 and gddr3?

Oh that link to that review was ideal by the way... thanks

only difference i know between GDDR2 and GDDR3 is the latter generally tends to be higher clocked and generate less heat, the memory interface is only 128-bit, but it has a 256-bit ringbus memory controller, which means in theory it should be able to use its memory bandwidth more efficiently than normal 128-bit cards, i had X1600XT, not massive performance, but good clocker and good price too

for £71 it seems like a good performer tbh! cant grumber really!
some of those benchies looked very promising just dont expect miracles ;)
oh yeah welcome!

thanks, and no i wont expect miracles lol, but then again i'm interested in seeing what the 1600XT would be like in Crossfire!? But thats a while off as it would mean a new mobo, and i havent even finished this build yet!

i was hoping you wouldn't say something like that lol, i was happy thinking in my own little world that the 1600xt was better than a x800... but no more lol. Does anyone know of a good cooler that will fit it? as i have heard all too much about the noise! Soz for all the questions, but while ya all continue to answer i will keep asking ;)

Well, just imagine two xfired 1600xts. Not amazing performance, but it'd likely outperform a x850, esp at higher resses/filtering levels due to more ram, would cost about the same, if not a little less at that price, and it'd have sm3, so you could enjoy a few more effects in some games :)
Ie at lower resses you might be able to get HDR and some filtering on oblivion :)

yeah, i mean thats all i'd need right now, basically i had the choice opt for a amd 64 3200+ and a better card, or the dual core 3200 (same as yourself as it happens) n the 1600. Overall i reckon the later was the better choice, dunno what you think?

second choice agreed. The x2 will last a little longer. Is very good for general use. The 3200+ isnt much stronger than as a single core than the 3800+ anyway! You'll be able to upgrade both later as they become cheaper and superseded, and still have a decent system.

Besides, the x1600s are meant to be a bit cack, but the 1600xt is meant to be ok. I wouldnt imagine it'd be too bad crossfired, at say 1280x1024/1600x1200 medium details with a little filtering

Could be quite interesting this. Asrock do a fairly cheap Xfire motherboard, 775XFire-RAID - with a couple of X1600XT's it could be a cheap gaming rig. Future proof to a certain extent as you have the ability to fit the Asrock daughter card.

no vcore adjust though :(

To get really good overclockers though you usually have to pay a premium.

For a stock machine budget gaming rig, its probably not bad tbh.
Might get vcore in bios update too.

shame its not on socket 939 :(

ECS do a cheepie mobo, £60 ish and apparantly it's good for the overclockers amongst us..
