So, Hull, nice/bad areas?

Yeah, you'll end up on the Beverley Road/Cottingham Road area. Typical student places: lots of takeaways and such!

As above, Bransholme, Orchard Park & Preston Road are the areas to avoid - but you're unlikely to get student properties there!

I'm 26 and have lived in hull all my life and even I'd think twice about going to preston road. As for student accommodation google "the scheme hull" for lists of all the hull uni properties and landlord partners/company partners. That's the way I found my student house which is exactly what I wanted.

There's nothing wrong with Hull. I was at the Halls in Cottingham, and lived around the Beverley Road area/Strathearn Street. Yes, there are some crap bits, and Hull seemed to be a big mass sprawl of urban decay but the people are far from bad.

You're only going to have incidents if you go looking for trouble, otherwise you should be fine. Had a decent nightlife when I was at Uni there too.

Yep, I did a foundation degree at hull - it was useless but it was a required stepping stone and you get a free year in halls to enjoy :)

Exactly! Hell I might even do a foundation degree in something random just for the sake of living in halls for a year!

Not exactly true is it. Bradford is a bigger dump than hull

No it aint, not even close.

Middlesbrough, London and Manchester are, but Bradford (though still bad, and suffers from being in the shadow of leeds) isn't.

The only nice parts of bradford are all on the outskirts of it. The city centre and immediate surroundings are just awful. Completely backwards city compared to hulls city centre and immediate surroundings.

I went to Uni in Hull too and made it out alive ;) It's got a bad rep but for a student it's perfectly fine. Everything's nice and cheap, you can't go wrong. I shared a house in between Newland Ave and Beverley Road and that was very much a student area. Newland Ave is decent, when I was there there was a butchers, greengrocers, takeaways and everything. Beverley Road is very much a main thoroughfare though so I wouldn't get a place on that!

You mean the bits with the signs saying "You are now leaving Bradford" Place is a craphole.

I know I will be a bit biased, but I really can't believe some of the dross that is appearing in this thread. This isn't the first thread on Hull and it won't be the last, but here we go:

I was born in Hull and lived there up until about 4 years ago. I went to the University there, graduated and then went to do an MSc at Birmingham Uni. I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt that I enjoyed my time in Hull 100X more than I did at Selly Oak. The University is a fantastic place to learn. It's in its own campus, some great old buildings, leafy surroundings, good transport links to the centre and the library is simply fantastic. Wander up to the 7th floor, find a desk and revise/study in peace whilst looking out over the city and the Humber. As with accomodation, for a fresher I wouldn recommend the universities halls, The Lawns, in Cottingham. They really are great and gauranteed a good time there, in a nice place. If looking to share a house, then Newland Ave, Beverley Road or some places on Cott road are pretty good places to be.

Sure it has its rough areas, which place doesnt? Bransholme, Orchard Park and bits of Kingswood are certainly not really recommended, but places like Cottingham are nice and so are many of the surround areas and villages, only 20 minutes drive and you are in pleasant countryside. The city centre has been drastically improved over recent years and the area besides the marina is a really great place to be on a warm summers day.

Off back there to see my folks over the weekend, that and there is a certain matter of a Rugby League score to be settled tomorrow.

I agree, I was a student there for 4 years till 2005 and it was brilliant :)

I used to live off Beverly Road (May Street) when going to Uni there. That area is OK, had no trouble there at all and pubs and takaways everywhere :)
