I don't think the h80i is to blame as the PC is 100% ok running a single GPU. Going to fire her up tonight and see what happens as i'm out of ideas without spending money.

could have been a spider or something got fried give it a test ease her in gentle with some basic games + youtube then run a bench like heaven 4.0 / firestrike. If it passes those intensive benches fine then you should be good and chalk it up to one of those random occurrences and make sure your power leads are fully plugged in (Sometimes they will look like they clicked into place but are actually not quite fully connected, give it a gentle wiggle from side to side while pushing in)

thanks murah, you might be on to something you know. i did notice some very small webs at the back of my desk fairly near the case. if thats what it was, he definitely went out with a bang! yeah i'll get some heaven and vally going in a mo, fingers crossed. again appreciate the help from everyone.

So an Nvidia card goes bang in a shower of sparks and blue smoke and you still try and put an AMD Driver in as the culprit. LOL that's really taking the fanboyism to it's limits.

I am hoping that is was indeed the demise of a wayward house spider.....I'd get a magnifying glass and check for any legs in and around the other components.

What psu have you got it could be the capasitors going I have has pops and sparks from a psu before..just ignored it till it passed away

@martian1 - XFX 1050W, i figured this may be a power supply issue but the pop seemed to come from the card not the supply unit, not sure if this is what you meant.

anyways, i put the 2nd card back in last night, the cards have swapped PCI slots since the issue, ran firestrike 4k for about an hour last night (no longer as had to go to bed as had a 6am start today) and also had my iphone recording the board just in case, but all seems to be ok!

need to use it for a few weeks to be sure but it seems like im in the clear, maybe this was some kind of mis adventuring bug after all?!
