Did you find the epic wide tarmac road that sweeps across the middle that is closed to the public when they open the plain up? Got told off by a warden for hooning it along there
I will always remember seeing 2 guys sat on the roof of a 4x4 of some sort in a rather large puddle. Don't know what 4x4 is was, as only about 6" of its roof was visible
But the mud is indeed that pale creamy brown colour, and gets everywhere.
Damn, that's a mess! How long was it running for before you noticed the oil/water mix?

In the header tank, not long at all. God knows how long it was building up gunk though, the dipstick and filler cap were clean though, so no way to tell. I think a lot of it appeared when the water bung blew out of the head, 5ish litres of coolant combined with the same amount of oil makes a lot of mess

It's clearly not head gasket failure, only Rovers get that. You must have broken it as Mondeos are 100% bomb proof.

The head's back on and torqued up, along with the inlet, exhaust, coilpack, covers, connectors, fuel rail, hoses....Apologies for no pictures, I'll be sure to take some of the finished article
Just as a quick follow-up to this, I had the engine running again, only to find an oil-water mix in the coolant system and oil filler cap. It turns out that the sub-zero temperatures had frozen the block (antifreeze mixture was too weak) and cracked it internally.
