So I emailed EVGA...

Maybe organize a forum collection (through kickstarter or something) till you reach the price of the GTX 590. And then shred the 7970.



Better yet, give it two weeks for the pot to reach the value. By that time you should have a kepler option...
 
You could give away prizes for the top donators... little chunks of the card mailed to em after you make your video..
 
Or auction them off for charity !

I did a lot of charity work a few years back. Always like to give money to children's charities. Had a bit of a crappy childhood myself so hate seeing kids robbed of something they should be entitled to.

The ones that scared me half to death just by reading what was said about them?

No idea. The first set I used made the screen roll like I was video taping a CRT (Alan Wake and Left 4 Dead did it). So after putting on another set and them working quite well (apart from the sleep issue) I don't fancy chancing my luck.

Usually I will only update a driver if I have a serious issue, or if a game refuses to run because it wants a new one. Learned my lesson the hard way from fixing what wasn't broken a couple of years ago.

Ended up putting on an Nvidia driver that stopped my fan spinning up and losing a perfectly good XFX 280 XXX. Not a cheap card, not a card I was in any position to replace, ended up getting a 5770 as a replacement.

I was, let's say, less than happy.

Nah. When it died Nvidia had stopped making replacements, and XFX gave them the rough end of a pineapple.

So they didn't have anything Nvidia to replace it with.

So I got shafted :(

You should have got an HD5850 1GB IMHO. The HD5770 1GB is probably more around GTX260 level.
 
Yeah I know. But I was dealing with a retailer who obviously had other ideas.

Probably because he got screwed also, but I will never know the answer to that. Either way I wrote a lovely review of that company and never bought another item from them again.

Wonder what combination of issues causes it to happen.

Not had that particular problem with my 7970 yet.
