Right Guys so im kinda stuck here, Im still rocking a old 290 tri-x, its showing its age now. one fan has pretty much died and thats making running my OC profile pretty much impossible, to much heat! :P. although it still plays most the games fine at 1080p i just feel its time to upgrade. so with AMD's Vega Gpus still nowhere to be seen. Im fairly limited, id like to stay away from the Whole RX line up, as there more of a side grade (or downgrade) if your comparing Benchmarks to a 290. the rumors of the RX490 are still yet to be confirmed.

So what are my options? id preferably rather stick with AMD, i just love to support underdogs haha. so is the R9 Fury X still a viable option? if so how long would it last at 1080p? and with 1440P & 4k Monitors Getting Slightly cheaper now how well would it fair at such res?,if i decided to upgrade later on.

Im not ruling Nvidia out nor am i bashing any Owners of them. another option would be a used 980ti but with recent rumors of them being gimped with latest driver releases this really puts me off. Are there any 980ti users that could confirm this? ideally id like a card that will last me another 2/3 years (maybe 4) at say 1080p or 1440p. Any suggestions? Ps i just think the GTX 1070 & 1080 are way to overkill for 1080p

the fury line aren't a very good choice for 1080p, much better at 1440+. if you are sticking to 1080p, then I would stick with the 290 for now.
The drivers being gimped isn't exactly true but the Maxwell architecture will most probably be at the back of NVidia's mind now, and may not get driver updates as quickly.
For cards that are gunna last, I am not sure if you can top the 290! It seems to be the wise choice waiting for AMD to release vega as you may know they are developing the next generation of consoles (this means low level optimisations with AMD hardware) and also the next generation of consoles are rumored to have 2 gpus, making it likely that game developers will have to code accordingly, making crossfire a possibility in the future.

Sorry if I went on, in short I would try hard to hold on to the 290 until something really noteworthy comes up (1080ti or vega)

Is there any way that you can replace the heatsink/fans on your 290 for a reasonable price? Maybe if someone is selling a completely dead tri-x you could salvage the fans?

You are quite wise to stay away from the RX480.. it simply would be an improvement on your setup.
1070 and 1080 are good choices on the Nvidia side, while Vega is what you'll be wanting on the AMD side.. if you are williing to wait 6 months.

Havent' noticed any issues with my 980Ti and the latest drivers that I downloaded.

A 290 to a 1060 I found to be a nice difference, cooler, quieter, faster, more memory etc EVGA 1060 6gb sc, that was in my main gaming system, but just paid for a 980ti zotac amp edition due to a new TV at 4k, based on watching various YouTube videos with a fair bit of tweaking the 980ti should offer a reasonable 4k gaming experience.

The 1060 will me put in my 2nd system.

The 980 Ti even once overclocked will annihilate 1080p it'll certaintly do 1440p and it'll have a cracking at 4k I'd know I have 2 in sli and know how it performs when sli is enabled/disabled

Apparently there might be an RX490 soon.

However, the cheapest way forward would be to plonk a new cooler on the card - if it is running too hot you will be loosing performance.

I'm following this thread with interest. I've got the same dilemma, but none of the existing cards excite me and the cards that 'may' appear over the next few months don't really get me going either, even though I could send quite a bit of cash.

I'll be intrigued to see what the OP decides to do...
