So I want to treat myself...

@Colonel_Klinck I think you really need to drive a few cars and see what works for you.

You might find that an MX-5 is sporty enough or you might also find that something less sporty but more comfy is fun enough/offers enough of a sense of occasion. I wouldn't get hung up on performance figures or anything, go by what you feel and only you can really be the person who decides.

Is this your only car?
Do you need a practical car?

If it is a second car or a weekend only car. Ask yourself what cars you've always wanted and what you want to use the car for.

I'm going to assume based on the thread so far that you're after "something special" and practicality isn't important.

If you want something truly special, then don't go based on specification, go on how it makes you feel. Stats don't necessarily equal enjoyment.

I don't mean to single out the Megane here, and to be honest a fast VAG model is probably the best example of this, but no one has suggested one of those! but it's a good example of picking a car based on performance stat top trumps.

Generally, owners also seem especially blind to this and often suggest their own car no matter the OPs circumstances.

An RS Megane is still a Megane and while technically brilliant to drive etc, it's ultimately a practical family car with better performance. I get it, I've driven a few RS models and they're brilliant, but their strength and weakness is that at the end of the day they're a Clio/Megane. If you need a practical car and this is your only car, then hot hatches and fast estates are great. But IMO don't really fit the OPs brief. They're not special enough unless you throw nostalgia or vastly different engineering in the mix.

Unless it's always been you dream car or you have an emotional attachment to it, you're never going to consider a Megane special and it's never going to make you smile just looking at it or turn around as you walk away for a second glance. A nurburgring lap time is not a good indicator of the best car for most people.

As an example to the OP - if you don't like the TT, then the TTRS might be technically brilliant, but do you desire one? It sounds like you're almost trying to convince yourself that it's a good choice.

If a Mustang V8 is your dream car, I'd start with a test-drive of that so you have something to measure the other cars against.

Remember if the Mustang V8 makes you smile just sitting in it in the car park or driving it at 30mph, but you need to drive the alternative flat out to enjoy it, you'll probably get more enjoyment from the Mustang as how often do you drive flat out?

It will be my only car. Like I said I've always been a bike man, so I have my van for my business and my motorbikes. I'm not looking for a car to go to Tesco's in, I'm looking for a car to go for a drive in grinning like an idiot and go away for weekends etc. Doesn't need to be practical at all really, though I'm looking for a certain level of comfort, so a Caterham or similar is not what I'm after. I do want to be able to gaze at it and be very happy with what I see.

Test drives are certainly going to be required in the new year.

Toyota Supra can be squeezed into your budget.

I have to ask though, compared to a bike, surely all cars are going to feel slow and not really grin-enducing? I think you do need something with a V8 or lairy engine then. Sack off the boring BMWs etc (the supra is a BMW underneath).

I'd certainly be looking at an R8, Lotus Elise/Exige/Evora, perhaps a 911 of some sort too, maybe even an AM Vantage.

Cheapest V10 I'd consider on AT is £43k https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202303075007392 but it has been on the forecourt for 285 days, since March. With interest rates not coming down any time soon and the market for fancy or premium cars in the crapper at the moment I'd go in with a hard offer of £38k and see what they say. be open to a bit of negotiation and I'd say £40k is doable.

I ride a bike, I find my Z4 3.0 si plenty exciting enough.
I’m pretty sure the Z4M isn’t going to disappoint

Nothing is coming up on Autotrader in that price bracket.
Not sure what your limiting your search to but here are some:

Interior largely feels just like a regular 2 series in the M2 Competition.

M4 Competition felt like you got a bit more oomf for your money, especially if you can find one with full leather interior with the carbon inlays, I'd really recommend it.
Looking at some of the pictures of the M4 interior, other than the seats and gear knob (due to the DCT) I struggle to see any difference between it and my 2015 428i GC. I don’t think I could ever get into one and think ‘this is special.’ It’s one of the downsides of buying a ‘normal’ car which has had a tuning arm of the company breath on it. Compare that to something uniquely designed as a sports car, like a Cayman or Boxster or even an F-Type and they look more special inside.

Isn't the M2 the better one to drive? More fun?

Hmm not sure, I think I definitely preferred the feel of my M4 Comp to my friends M2 Comp. Felt a bit more robust to me, not sure how to describe it without test driving both!

For me it was the added carbon inlays and full leather, something which appears pretty rare to find on the non M models, not sure you could even spec the former on them. The interior on my friends M2 is nigh on identical to a 220i courtesy car I had.

Originally looked at 981 Cayman S before I bought the M4. Preferred the M4 interior in the end personally. Never liked F-Type interiors, or Jag as a whole! But obviously just my opinion, each to their own! :P

Its not outright speed I'm looking for. You are right very few cars can compete with the acceleration and speed of sportsbikes. I've been there and done that though and I actually prefer big twins to screaming 4s, I have a 1290 Adventure R as my daily ride as such and 1290 Superduke for when I want to be a bit naughty. I think that might be what makes me want a V8 though, its the grunt rather than some high revving engine that appeals.

TVR Cerbera with change left over for running costs/RAC cover.
