Right, fingers crossed i should be getting me a 1.6ghz, 1gb of rambus server..

and i want to finaly do what ive been moaning on about.. get linux..

so i've pretty much deicded on ubuntu server.

how ive setup a virtual machine on me xp rig so i can test out stuff before i get the server.. but i would like peoples advice on the following

best piece of software for a mail server and ftp server. it says ubuntu server comes with apache, php and all that prebuilt in so thats pretty cool.

i know its gonna be a learning curve but i want to be able to atleast have my web server, mail server and ftp server up straight away, then i will start fiddling and learning..

so yeah any other advice would be great.

It's easier than you can imagine to get those setup on ubuntu. just do "apt-get install proftpd apache2 php4". For email the easiest option is probably postfix which you can also install with apt.

I also suggest you install webmin and perhaps vhcs (again with apt).
 
That will get what you want up straight away and you can then play around with stuff on the server...that will complete the curve!

Okay - Uhm. im tottaly new to this? so what, i logon and type that line into the console right? lol. and how do i like set things up, browse the files and what not so i can change httpd.conf etc ? are there any resources out there for total newbies like myself?

Im loving this :-),

for now ive installed KDE just while i get used to Linux and learn it.. but I'm loving Adept manager and stuff.. no more searching around the Internet for free applications and what not aha. thanks for your help buddy =]

tbh for the spec you quoted earlier you might as well keep running a gui. It's not going to hinder you and it's nice to have something pretty to look at.

I take it you're running kubuntu?
 
yeah, good point :-) think i will keep it.

and yes i am indeed running kubuntu :-).

out at the moment, but i will get everything fully working of the virtual machine and litteraly copy exactly what i did over to the real server when i get it. still not sure if i got the balls to install just ubuntu on it, or if i will install server 2k3 and VM an install of ubuntu.. im scared lol
