So is Sir Wiggo a cheat then?

in China / USSR with athletic factories, they compete/competed more for nationalistic/ultruistic benefit rather than personal financial gain, (and took what the doctor recommended too), and, I suspect, were/are idolised much more than UK competitors like eg. Mo who chose (dig) to compete for UK.
.. what did the Greeks compete for ... and what were their records versus todays (for javelin .. no watches for the 100cubits ? I guess)

The batting above their level ... at least for UK cycling was down to the bottomless budget ... to the detriment of other sports, like whoevers monopolising the current F1

I realised I forgot Boris, as the exception that proves the rule on uk cheating.

They competed to be remembered.

The classical Greeks didn't have the Judaeo-Christian concept of an afterlife as such. They believed that their path to immortality rested in being remembered on Earth.

Hence Alexanders preference for a short life of fame over a long one of obscurity.
