So it's out of S22 Ultra or Oppo x5 Pro

It's that time for an upgrade.

Currently have the find x2 pro. Has probably been my favourite phone to be honest.

S22 Ultra. Best screen... Pen (maybe?)... Updates for longer.
Slow charging....not so great battery? Looks quite bland.

Oppo... Good screen... Cameras on par with S22(?).. Super fast charging...cheaper! Only 256gb this time... (x2 was 512)

It should be easy to go oppo but it's more of the same so I'm torn..... Feels like I'm missing out and more like an incremental upgrade?

Thoughts?

Have you had the Android 12 update on your Find X2? I got it on Saturday and really don't like it after really liking ColorOS 11. So I've got a Pixel 6 Pro instead.

In a bit of the same boat as you.
The fact they took the Periscope (5x) optical zoom out of the Find X2 Pro, and reverted to 2x Optical on the Find X5 Pro is a bit of a deal breaker for me; as I really loved it for getting shots of wildlife etc when out places with the wife; the phone overall looks great, but I'm just finding they've downgraded things I actually used (storage/zoom), which hurts when it's a premium £1000+ phone. Maybe the rest of the camera setup and the new processing makes up for it; but I've never found digital zoom etc to offer the same quality as proper optical zoom, so I am extremely sceptical.

So frustrating, as honestly, if they'd offered me the Find X2 Pro, with better processing, I'd have been happy to upgrade, and the extra upgrades like better cooling would have been icing; but as it is we're saddled with downgrades as well as the upgrades.

Yeah a really weird upgrade time this one.

Also been reading how the S22 isn't in the best shape software wise and glitchy.

Like everything at the minute paying more for small increments it seems.

Also missed out on the pack of goodies with the Oppo which sweetened the deal... Not sure they will offer anything else (I'm currently with EE and get friends and family discount) so kinda have to stay with them. Last time I got some nice Bose headphones.

Yes, I also got B&O headphones with mine; which I've used quite a lot in the home office due to the noise cancellation, it was a really great deal at the time.

It's frustrating, as I'm still erring towards the Oppo Find X5 Pro over the S22 and Pixel 6 Pro, but that lack of periscope camera is really irritating me, and almost makes me tempted to miss out this year, and go SIM only for a year, and see if next year's phones are better.

I have been trying to see if I can find any comparisons on the cameras, but not yet found one which really covers it. the storage reduction I could deal with, 256GB is still a lot, even though 512GB is better, but just not sure I can bring myself to swap to a phone which drops the really nice optical zoom. Not sure about you but I actually thought the 5x Optical on the FX2Pro was better than the main camera at times.

The CPU/GPU/cooling improvements on the FX5Pro seem worth it; but I don't get why they really couldn't have left the feature set as is, and just upgraded...that is the POINT.

Same for charging.. Not had a problem with battery to be honest on the X2 but a quick zap for 10 mins if needed and all good.

S22 slower charging and have to buy a bloody charger too! Lol... Its really pathetic to be honest. I know what I should do.... But the lure of newer is better is strong.... Just not that much in this case.

Problem is there isn't much choice. Not a fan of apple so S22 X5 or you go back to Google.

Yep, its really X5 Pro, Pixel 6 Pro or Samsung. Not a fan of Apple myself either.

I guess maybe it was space it took inside the phone or something, but as a user who'd got used to having, I just don't know why Oppo ditched the Periscope zoom or justified swapping it out; given how good it was.

I am wondering if we will maybe see a Google Pixel 7 Pro this summer, which maybe will combine the camera I want, with a faster processor. The Pixel 6 Pro Tensor processor's relative lack of performance compared to the Snapdragon or Exynos kinda puts me off it a bit, and means it wouldn't really be much if a step forward from the 865 in the X2 Pro.

If the Tensor 2 has the performance whilst having the camera, Google have basically got me I think. At the rate its going, I will definately be thinking for a few months when my contract expires and goes sim only (I'm on O2, so device/SIM is already split).

Tensor chip in the real world is no joke. Better ISP, better AI and language detection. And pixels UI is the smoothest of any android handset.

And like I said the zoom is first class, as is the main sensor.

And pixel 7 pro not till Nov.

I don't doubt it's no joke in real life, but neither is the 865 we already have in the X2 Pro :)
The Zoom/Cameras really do seem to be the best in the Pixel (my brother has one), so that's why I am maybe very interested in the Pixel 7 Pro, even if I have to wait a few months.

In my case, I do a combination of general usage, gaming, photography, browsing etc, so I don't want to buy a phone that is really great in some of those conditions, but is way behind other phones in others; I'd be shooting myself in the foot; and whilst no slouch, I've seen some tests where the first generation Tensor can be about 1/3 slower than the Snapdragon 8, which isn't insignificant. The second generation Tensor may completely resolve this; especially as the Tensor one was pretty decent despite being Google's first go at customised silicon.

One point I will give the Pixel 6 Pro though is price, its considerably cheaper than the other options. As I'll only be upgrading July-ish though at earliest, I may hold out on that Pixel 7 and see what it brings to the table.

I went from a OnePlus 9 Pro, tried the S22U and am now on the Pixel 6 Pro. The pixel is just as fast as them all but noticeably smoother. We've pretty much peaked in terms of required grunt. What sets things apart now is camera, and battery life etc.

Edit. If you can wait till Nov then even better. Tensor will be improved and so should the phone signal.

And tbh all 3 are good phones.

I have the find x5 pro and got the s22 ultra to compare and to be honest the camera and battery life are better on the find x5 pro. The s22 ultra had the April update and the find x5 pro had the March update which had some camera improvements.

The camera had a lot more detail in all lighting conditions that the s22 ultra, straight forward point and shoot test.

I also have the find x2 pro which I just received the March security patch on the android 12 so the second android 12 update.

I might send the oppo find x5 pro back and wait for the oppo find x5 ultra which is rumoured.

Will have the following on top of the find x5 pro

Larger storage and ram options
zoom camera will be back 10x or more.
Larger screen 6.78'
Same battery but with 150w charging
Possibly undersceen camera
Snapdeagon gen1 plus processor

We'll get the Pixel 7 in October as that's when Google release their phones. And don't believe all of the benchmark guff about performance; The tensor combined with totally stock Android means the P6 is plenty quick enough.

I largely agree, although battery efficiency and performance consistency is also king, and thats one area the Pixel 6 Pro fails a bit it seems; and one of the things my brother complains about (he has one). Pixel 7 Pro and this potential Oppo Find X5 Ultra will be on my radar; as it'll be about the time I upgrade anyway, I don't mind waiting through summer for a noticeably better phone, as my SIM only side of my contract which will recur is not actually a bad deal. I dont actually mind if its slightly thicker either; as I've always been happy to have a slightly thicker phone which just gets everything right, rather than the excessive drive to be slimmer at the cost of actual feature set.

If the above spec that Asian provided is correct; the Pixel 7 Pro or X5 Ultra sound like right up my street. I cannot imagine Google won't have designed the Pixel 7 Pro/Tensor 2 to surpass the first in every way, and I'm actually happy to not have to go back to Samsung; albeit in some of the reviews I can see the Zoom lens in use, and it confirms exactly why I don't want to lose that functionality; especially not on a high end phone!

Yeah does feel like I need to wait for the `next` phones otherwise feels a little bit of a downgrade (even though on paper it's not)
Smaller memory and slower charging (Samsung) it just feels weird.

Pretty sure the S22 ultra seems to have gone up a couple of quid a month since I first looked too even with 30% off it don't feel right.

30% off?

so its upgrade time next week -

Now £9 per month in it between the 256gb Ultra or the X5pro .... was waiting for the Sony - might have had a chance but now not the case - battery life will probably be poor.
Probably the most underwhelming upgrade Ive had in recent years... feels like a slightly different (S pen ect) V a Negligible upgrade from the X2.... don't think I could wait for Pixel7 or indeed Next iPhone etc to see what they are like.
