One could use your line of reasoning to use the term ****** - its 'merely' an abbrevition of the latin niger, referring to the colour of a persons skin, which is an undeniable fact.....
You don't abbreviate something by adding a g

Anyhow, calling somebody "a ******" is therefore literally translated to calling someone "a black", which could be treated as rude as saying "he's a gay" - the extra "a" implies some kind of unreasonable seperation.
However, saying someone is "a brit" or "an aussie" or "a ****" ....
I just cant see why the last should ever be considered offensive.
