So new boiler - Vaillant or Bosch?

We had a new boiler (Vaillant 831 Eco Plus) installed a couple of weeks ago along with all new copper pipes and 7 new radiators. Must admit quite impressed with the new boiler, water gets hot quicker and is hotter than previous, and also maintains heat better when the taps are open less.

And best of all it cost us nothing :)

You don't need a hot water tank (unless you don't have enough pressure for a manual shower) as the condensing boiler heats water on demand.
.

Does a combi boiler also do away with the pump? I have a hot water tank and under it is a motorised valve for using either just hot water or heating and hot water. Then underneith that is the pump. Would all this be self contained in the new combi boiler?

Would be great to add extra room to my bedroom if all that can be ripped out.

Just had a Worcester Bosch 42cdi fitted myself. For an extra few quid it's flexible for the future, with possible plans to extend.

Of the two boilers I would go for the one with the better flow rate if your satisfied with the quality of both. Even with a flow rate of 18 on the 42 Cdi the difference is noticeable but minimal, when more then one tap is on. It can fill our barh in no time as well which is great. However the improvement over the old gravity system is immense!

If the system has been treated right from the get go, then yes you dont need to flush every year, i'd still flush everytime i'd replace the inhibitor, its just good practise.Prevention is better than cure imo.

What is the lifetime of inhibitor and when should it be replaced.

My system (Bosch Junior24i and new pipes/ rads) is using sentinel x100 installed 2005

Also, should I consider fitting a filter device?

Generally every 3-4 years, you dont need a power flush or anything just fill and drain job. You can test the existing inhibitor if its still working too.

If the system is working ok, you can get away with just topping up the inhibitor every 18 months or so. It one of those, it can be overkill to drain down and refill every 3 years, but it all depends on the condition of the system, drain some water off and see what colour it is, if its blackish then i'd drain and refill and add inhibitor, if its clear than just top up the inhibitor.

But also ensure you use the same type of inhibitor.

cheers for the advice.

is it worth considering installing a filter ie

are you sure valliants have 5 year warranty? I have the valliant ecotek - had it for about 2 years and apart from the digital panel lcd going blank within the first year (which was replaced under guarantee) it's not given us any problems.

It cost £900 inc the weather condensor or whatever that fancy panel is called and £300 fitting via a Corgi registered plumber who also installed higher gas flow rate copper pipes from the meter to the boiler.

My boiler is a Bosch, installed it about 5-6 years ago never missed a beat. Keep thinking maybe it is time to get it serviced.

How are people getting such good quotes? we can't seem to get any lower than £3.5k. Also very surprised to see a British gas quote for £2.8k, they wanted over £4k when we got a quote from them a while back.

quote for what exactly? Just a boiler, fitting or re-plumbing and installing new radiators?

edit - just had a look at my boiler it's a valiant ecotec exclusive

Regular flushing of the system should not be required if it's water tight and has had an inhibitor injected. Anyone telling you that is simply selling you snake oil, much like anual services are not really necessary just a nice earner for the gas man to come out and spend 20 minutes doing very little.

Regular flushing, probably not. But it's not snake oil if you're having a new boiler installed. There will be some bits in the water after a while and it is better to have them out rather than having them in your new boiler.

I had a closed system with inhibitor added, but when it was drained and flushed prior to my new boiler being installed it wasn't completely clean. The cloudiness was from the inhibitor, apparently, but there was a bit of sludgy gunk in it. Not much, but I'd rather have it gone than going into my new boiler.

I also had two filters installed into the system, one magnetic and the other not.

I think it's better to be on the safe side with expensive new stuff.

An annual service gives me an extended warranty and cheaper boiler insurance, so the same goes for that too. Besides, when it comes to gas I'd rather have someone check it over annually, just in case. £1.50 a week isn't much for that.

EDIT: To get back to the OP's question, the installers I asked mostly leaned towards Worcestor-Bosch but said you couldn't really go wrong with either.

I've had 2 quotes from 2 boiler companies recently, do these prices sound ok? The prices are to replace my current boiler with a new one. I've also added British Gas which I won't be using.

British Gas - worcester bosch 30si (£2800)
Company B - worcester bosch 30si (£1600)
Company C - worcester bosch 28ij (£1850) / worcester bosch 29cdi (£2100)

Has anyone ever had a competitive quote from British Gas? How do they still get work?

Because people will go with a big company as they trust them more. And the independent plumber who has quoted £1000 cheaper has to be dodgy at that price surely! Or so my friends told me when talking about their boiler replacement. So glad I don't think like that!

I also got a quote from BG for 2.5k for my straight swap from my old combi to this new one, and that's with a £400 discount! The guy I'm going with is £1680, installed a friends boiler and did a good job, so I'm happy, just got to choose a boiler Gah!
