So Nvidia/ATI price drops this week?

Nvidia's top end GeForce GTX 260 and 280 graphics cards—whose power borders on sorcery—launched for $399 and $650, respectively, less than a month ago. But pressure from ATI has driven Nvidia to already cut the price, hard. The GTX 280 is now only $399, while the GTX 260 is $299, the same price as ATI's HD 4870. Good to see ATI back in the fight. Anyone already buy this and feel hosed though? Competition is a lovely thing. [CNET]

Will the newer cards require an upgrade in motherboard? See my spec please.
With the newer high end cards, the PSU is the first problem, followed by the CPU bottlenecking the GPU at low resolutions (effectively making the card as powerful as a cheaper card). Your PSU is fine though, aswell as your motherboard and CPU. You need to also make sure you have enough space in your case for the cards.

Aslong as you use sufficient AA/AF at 1680x1050, then a GTX2xx or HD4xxx is a suitable purchase to max AA/AF and to futureproof your system.

Right now, however, i'd suggest a 4850/4870 as they are the best bang for buck and can handle AA superbly. The GTX260/280 has come down in price however.

this man speaks the truth about the res and aa.noticed this with my 4850 and my 3800x2 at low res up until 1600 it plays like a dream after you go above.time for a new cpu me thinks.

Hmmm, if they do a special for like a day for the evga (or the BFG) card at £299 I would find it so hard to resist I probably would just end up buying it. They would certainly clear the stock :D

I dont have a problem with leadtek, infact I have never owned one, I'd just feel happier with my purchase if it was an Evga, XFX or BFG card.

Martyn

putting xfx along side bfg is just insulting bfg.....because you havent had trouble with the card just shows you havent experienced the customer support they have...if they have any that is.

when ive had a problem with a bfg card...i emailed them and they replied asking me to send it to said address...was replaced within a week.

when i had a problem with a xfx card.....no matter how many emails i sent them they just didnt reply....so where exactly is the warranty on their products ? i would rather get a ocuk brand with just 1 year warranty...at least u know where you stand with them and make a saving on the initial purchase

From that tech power up link, it states the expected price of the GTX280 to be $450, that's £226 + VAT = £265.

The 4870X2 is expected to be $500, which is £250 + VAT = £294. Not too sure how you came to £340.

Am I reading it wrong? When I click the tech power up link it states $499 not $450????

And the news is the the expected price of the 4870x2 is going to be $549 and not $499 now.

GTX 200 prices crashing, Nvidia said to be shifting strategy

http://www.tgdaily.com/html_tmp/content-view-38373-113.html

Pricewatch – There is trouble in Nvidialand. AMD’s new graphics cards apparently have surprised Nvidia, forcing the company to cut the prices of its new cards. Sources told TG Daily that Nvidia is adjusting its marketing strategy to GeForce 8800 cards to avoid what has all the signs for a big sales decline on the high end. Of course, that means that it is a good time for graphics cards shoppers. Here’s some insight in what you can expect to find on the market.

Nvidia has been dominating the graphics chip market for some time now. In fact, the last troubles are about five years back, when Nvidia faced the ATI Radeon 9700-9800 series in 2002 and 2003 and Nvidia’s own GeForce FX turned into an embarrassment. The new GTX 200 looked like a solid design, but it appears that AMD’s Radeon 4800 is shaking the ground in Santa Clara once again and we may be seeing a time in which Radeon desktop cards are gaining market share again. Nvidia products are experiencing substantial price drops: Some GTX 200 series cards are now 25% cheaper than just a week ago.

Can't wait until we get the prices reduced over here!
