I'm considering buying a new card soon (Just got a job so things are finally going my way) but I want to go for AMD because of price to performance but I also want Nvidia because of shadow play..I'm stuck pretty much, Is it likely that AMD will release something similar to it? Please point me in the right direction on what path I should take

Not likley, if they will it will be through AMD intergrated 3'rd party aps like Raptr, which they already have to copy Nvidia's one click game setup and live streaming. it might also have recording, don't know.

Is Shadow Play any better than FRAPS or DXTory?

FRAPS generally hits performance pretty bad and last time I checked doesn't have a continuous loop mode which is one of the 2 big benefits of shadowplay over most alternatives.

MSI AB's built in recording is fairly decent but quality can suffer at times and again last time I checked doesn't have the continuous loop mode though is fairly minimal in fps hit.

Not really used DXTory much recently so not sure what state thats in.

True Dat ^^^^ i tried to record BF4 using FRAPS, BF4 is already a very CPU intensive game, while thats not a problem for my CPU normally, as soon as i hit the FRAPS Hot Key my FPS tanked to unplayable levels.

DXTory is apparently much better, but i find setting it up a real pain.

The only Other alternative is RadeonPro, which has very low CPU overhead and the recoding quality is actually better than FRAPS, but does churn out slightly larger files, about 20% larger, you can lower the quality for smaller files, but to get very crisp 1080P, 10 minutes recording will result in over 5GB.

If you have a Kepler-based card then I think I read that Shadowplay is finally launched on October 28th, so you could give it a whirl before deciding. If you don't, I'll certainly be giving it a go :)

I think it will be faster than a software solution, but the quality of the recording is yet to be seen. I personally think that you'd still get better quality video by using Dxtory and a lossless codec (Lagarith), which you can then transcode to H264 for uploading to YouTube etc.

Either way, I'll be very interested to see Shadowplay in action.

I'm sorry m8 but i cannot see how that statement can be true. FRAPS captures raw uncompressed data, doesnt get any better than the raw feed?, which is why its such a hog on the resources. Dont get me wrong, i have no love for fraps, i prefer Afterburner actually, have had some good results with that with almost no loss in fps unless the game was being "screwy" with me.

Thats fine, i like FRAPS, i don't know what its CPU overhead is and it works fine in any game other than BF4, in that it increased my CPU usage and FPS tanked.

MSI Afterburner 3.0.0 Beta 16 supports the buffer recording ability introduced by FRAPS and now present in Shadowplay. The software also supports hardware encoding, video capture via Intel QuickSync.

Should you happen to have a qualifying Intel CPU, you can use QuickSync for hardware capture though gaming with an AMD card.

Fixed that for you

Your signature is certainly not a lie. Also have added to it for you.

I find it hilarious that people think the 290 is a hot running card, its got the same issue that ivybridge and Haswell have, not getting rid of heat quick enough. People forget so easily the old hot as hell GTX 580's and the GTX 480. Its those cards that caused Nvidias push for less heat output and the same will happen with AMD now their new card is out.

Up to you really which feature set you want

AMD
Mantle, Great compute performance, Great value for money, Noisy, Hot, Great games packages

Nvidia
Shadowplay, Physx, CUDA, G-Sync, 3dvision, High prices, often not good value for money.

Hmm guess I should update fraps, don't recall an option for buffer recording last time I used it.
