24 hrs down and adobes master plan to maximise profits and steer people away from pirating failed.

I wonder if they will still offer -

Adobe are supposedly reviewing the situation based on the fallout online.
Its being said that Adobe are considering doing the following:

Offer subscriptions significantly cheaper if you sign up to a 3 year contract, where as normal subs can cancel at any time. In return for the cheaper sub and contract you are limited to the current release with no upgrade potential, but at the end of the contract are given a downloadable version to install.

dont know how true it is.

Adobe's Creative Cloud implementation isn't very complicated as far as I can see - they're just putting more online functionality in a product that was fundamentally designed for individual, offline installs. So I'm not surprised it's been cracked already.

To be honest, I can't really see any compelling reason to upgrade over CS6. They're marketing the Cloud features as a USP but I think they need to focus on refining what's already there.

If Adobe wanted to prevent piracy they'd be using dongles to lock the suite - and then there's the whole 'to ensure market dominance by making it easy to crack and therefore ubiquitous' argument too. The subscription model is there to ensure that there's a known revenue coming in every month (as opposed to the end of every CS cycle) and to present a lower entry barrier into the Adobe way of doing things.

I think there's a reasonable argument to make (and I'm not advocating piracy) but pirate Photoshop has probably been the making of many a designer.

I really don't think the idea with CC is to combat piracy. If there was no piracy, Adobe would instead have formidable competition that would drastically reduce it's margins.
The price of Adobes creative suite is simply ridiculous, but business users have no alternative and thus no choice but to submit to Adobe's extortion.

I will say however, the last few versions of LR were reasonable, but then I hear they plan a subscription version in the future. How long will it be before it's subscription only?

So I'm looking for the exit from adobe. I'm never going to subscribe to use their software if there is any alternative. At the moment, for me this is a combination of Apple software and open source alternatives. Ideally I would like to see an open source equivalent to LR like gimp is to photoshop.

There is Darktable http://www.darktable.org/install/

It's expensive, but ridiculous? I don't think so. My copy of Creative Suite Design Premium CS6 at work cost over £1k, but if we design one website in a year we'd make all that back. And yet it gets used day in, day out. And there isn't anything better. Whilst I'd love to see true competition, it's not actually terrible value given how much it gets used in most workplaces.

Ideally I would like to see an open source equivalent to LR like gimp is to photoshop.

Problem is is that GIMP isn't quite an equivalent to Photoshop. It's a great stab and extremely good for the price, but it falls short for professional print support.

Lol, adobe software is cheap compared to a lot of design orientated software. If it's too expensive for you then move on, it's not for you.

I think too many photographers get hung up on having it. This program that costs hundreds where for photography Lightroom and elements will easily do the job for years.

With elements 11 and LR4 there's not one feature I used in CS5 that I will ever miss for photography. I think the pricing of LR since 4 has been very realistic as is Elements.

true but sometimes those features you seldom use become invaluable

Such as?

Tell me exactly what I'm missing as a photographer using Elements 11 and LR4 (soon to be 5) from the latest CS.

I've asked a couple of times and no one ever answers. I've searched and read many forums and never see much of use and anything that get's updated in CS like better clone tools just filter down to the next elements anyway :)

I don't really do PP, like you LR is good enough, but... something as simple as resizing is much better in CS as is creating actions that involve third party apps such as noise ninja etc. Then there is the whole layer thing, but that's beyond what I personally need. CS is the better tool, but if you're happy with LR and Elements then they are the tools for you.
