During your final year at uni, you're asked to make a video based on anything for your FMP (final major project).
I just came across this recently and was amazed , apparently people spend anywhere from £1k to £5k for their FMP!

I am surprised that costs only £5k !

I can see a steady cam used, a helicopter shot, a dolly shot, some kind of clamp on the side of the car, the amount of gear it used is ridiculous !

It took a lot of leafs out of Top Gear for sure but great work :)

Either that or a huge number of contacts and favours called in! I certainly couldn't have afforded to spend £1k on my final project, let alone £5k!!

And I suspect drone footage, not helicopter!

Depends, you might be able to do all that without spending the money....

The Uni likely has its own broadcast quality camera gear, so thats one aspect taken care of.

The aerial shots all looked like those taken from a drone, which is becoming popular everywhere now. The fact it is flying so low and can be seen near enough taking off from right next to the cars suggests this over a helicopter.

The cars may belong to friends, or infact anyone the filmmaker approached who was willing to be part of it with their cars. There are all sorts of reasons there. Infact, the most expensive thing could have been the hiring of the runway they used, the drivers might have been happy to do it for nothing for fun if they were their cars.

Personally, I felt the transition from the Ferrari to the shot of the plane landing was jarring. Technically its going to be marked well, but creatively, I felt it was pretty much a direct copy of what they do on the likes of Top Gear, so in that sense, it didn't really say anything.

When I did my final year project, which is 10 years ago this year!
I think I spent about £100, of which you could claim some of that back from the University as part of your budget.

I really liked it, but small details bug me. If you're going to do a close up of switch gear, at least clean off the grubby fingerprints. And those closing credits - argh!

It was an aerial drone from Skyfly Video in Kent, it's on their twitter. Nice little put together video I should imagine it scores well technically although creatively as said before it felt a bit like it was taken directly from Top Gear.

That's really cool. Loads of gear used as Ray says. Also love the voice over, it makes me want to drink whiskey and travel to the 70s and seduce lots of ladies :D

Yea there are a few things I noticed too. Like the ball point pen dropping into frame when they are filming the runway.
It was skyfly which they used and they also rented put the movî from CVP. In terms of camera, they used a black magic and maybe a phantom for the slow mo?
I know a few people managed to get some of the funds from kickstarter/indiegogo

It's ace but man i wish he'd colour graded it. I do wonder what he spent and if he needed to?

My final film cost ~£100. I worked on one that cost £7k (that wasnt that great). There's a huge argument for wether you need to sink tons of cash into them and honestly, I'm not sold either way.

I think the biggest let down for the one you've posted is it's just not coloured. Otherwise there's some stunnign shots in it.

And filmed to naturally fit a 21:9 display, super!

I think it not being colour graded works just fine. It's fitting for what's on show and where it's being shown.

A copy of Davinci Resolve Lite is free though. I can't imagine how much criticism someone would get if they dropped 5K on a 1DX/a photography trip and then proceeded to print straight ACR conversions for an exhibition. Maybe they didn't want to go full Top Gear? :p

Lot of leafs? There's an understatement, it's a complete rip off! Whack Jeremy's voice over it and you could pop that into any episode of top gear almost seamlessly. Just needs a few super heavy corner vignettes and it's set.

Here's my final project. I'm just curious what peoples reactions are given my reaction to the OPs post, given its of a similar topic. It's a BTS promo for a custom bike builder. This cost me about £600, but £500 of that was hotel for 5 people in Eastbourne for 3 nights, so about £100 on the actual production.
