So what are the chances of having a new forum?

Going to be pestering an admin as I think it would be a very good idea and there is certainly enough traffic to warrant one, the one question is if the sections losing the traffic can afford to do so.

Pestering is always good

:D

I agree....

If there's enough traffic and Q/A going on, surely it might open up another business opportunity for the some higher level sales for OCUK ?

Does this not detract from what OCUK is trying to offer, I understood they have this forum 'Primerily' to aid people in descisions before they purchases products from OCUK or help trouble shoot and tweek items once bought from OCUK.

Many issues within the workplace would mean the mentioning of competitors which is a forum 'no-no' , most business would have legacy systems from other sources or contracts with specific suppliers/vendors, although not all suppliers to businesses have a 'Retail' account for enthusiasts and joe public, some do!

On top of which there are already many peer-to-peer support group based forums available such as Tek-Tips , which I highly recommend!

It might be worth OCUK sponsoring someone to have a Tek-Tips dedicated OCUK forum! - that way OCUK members get access to the wealth of information and support of the Tek-Tips community, and OCUK get access to a vast base of potential customers from the TT community.

It also would mean the costs would be kept down as running such a forum is expensive and i'm not sure OCUK wants to offer free peer-to-peer support to the masses that might not equate to actual customers.

That way everyone is a winner!

just my 2pence worth ;)

I relay dont think there looking to intergrate communities, there are many specialised sites like ExpertsExchange for one but im refering to using the existing user base.

The consumer and the business market are very dissimilar in the way that products are bought and sold.

agreed, but i was thinking more along the lines of the IT professional who might purchase items from OCUK for personal use, like myself!

if OCUK did expand the forums , they would have to relax the 'no competitor' post rule, which i feel will not be likely.

I don't see how people talking more in depth about IT issues would mean that they would have to relax the "no competitor" rule at all. All folk need to know is the brand names of things and what the issues are, the reseller is irrelevant IMHO.

Sense prevails over all.

:)

I do try and talk sense occassionally!

Seriously though I do think now is a good time for this new subforum to be introduced. If you look at General Hardware on any given day most new posts are "Speck me a gaming rig"; "About to buy, is this OK?" and the like. They have a place and it is great that inexperienced users can ask their more seasoned conuterparts for much needed advice at that time. The flip side of this is that more experienced users with a query about something important to them often find that within an hour or so their post is pages away from the top page. This is very frustrating as most users only look at the top page and maybe pages 2 and 3. Therefore unless the OP bumps the post (something that is frowned upon) they may never get a reply.

Yewen, what are the noises like coming from the big wigs? Any chance of the new subforum soon?

I actually work at Dell as an Internal Technical Consultant - i've got no problems lending people some advice on some enterprise stuff as and when they might need it?

Last time i checked about 80% of the posts on the front page!! That doesnt help the majority with problems.

:)

I like the idea but many of the Enterprise techies in here are extremely specialised. I'm a Technical Architect specialising in designing complete J2EE environments on Unix. How many people need help on how to size an e-commerce website?

What about a sub forum on software enginering or motor mechanics? I cant see the point of such a forum where most 'normal' people wouldnt have a clue what your talking about.

Why not start up your own forum if there is a gap?

True, but not everyone... and with the range of specialisations on here im sure questions would arise every now and again to stop you getting lonely m8 ;)

I think it's a good idea, and would certainly frequent the forum and hope to be able to help with Cisco related queries!

Not necessarily true a lot of people are either system administrators or work in 1st/2nd/3rd line support.

Over the years its appears that people are jack of all trades and masters of none although a lot of people do specialise in certain areas like yourself.

Personally through what im qualified to do and work in each day covers Microsoft, Cisco, HP, Dell, IBM and a host of third party hardware/software vendors.
