Just ordered a overclocked i7 haswell bundle with new ssd a 850w psu
looking at a new graphics card to been looking at the gtx780 or the 290x will be mostly playing bf4 I have always had a NVidia card so have never had a amd card
what do you think ?

Its cheaper by quite some margin (even if they are ref. only). For BF4 Mantle should (could you imagine if it didn't!) give even more of an advantage to AMD's offering.

Until nvidia react's the 780 just looks overpriced. Still a very good card.

As an Nvidia owner I can tell you that I would not touch Nvidia now. Not with a barge pole.

The reason is simple, game support. AMD pretty much have the entire gaming market in their back pocket (both consoles, Mantle, HSA, ETC).

I read something (I can't remember where) that Mantle actually works with any Frostbite Title. So it will work with Battlefield 3, BFBC2, Mirror's Edge, even.

If that's true? the AMD will demolish the Nvidia.

Also as XDC has said Nvidia's brain dead pricing monkeys still have their prices live. Until Nvidia sack those monkeys and get some one in that has some sense then again, avoid. Nvidia are being asked serious questions now, we need to see the answers.

Mantle won't be used with older titles unless they're ported to Mantle, which is unlikely (if ported to anything, it'd probably be OpenGL). BF4 and other upcoming Frostbite games will be able to use it though, but we don't know how much performance it'll add over DirectX. One thing it will do is provide all features to anyone, not just those on Windows 8.1.

Actually, I take back my praise of rightness.. Check this out..

And -

If that’s not the case, though, it means that older games will also benefit from such a move. In other words, PC gamers can expect better performance via Mantle on games like Command & Conquer, Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3 and Need For Speed: The Run. Still, we find it hard to believe such a thing, as the development teams would have to release patches with Mantle support for them, and that’s unlikely to happen… especially for games such as NFS: The Run.

As Toyah Wilcox once said - "Ith a mthytorwee"

DICE is very clearly referring to Frostbite 3 alone there. It'd be more than a small patch to make an older engine use Mantle.

They say 15+ titles. Frosbite itself hasn't changed that much underneath, so it could well be right.

Either way colour me very excited :D

15+ upcoming titles - I think that was mentioned in the AMD presentation.

Changing from DirectX to Mantle is a big thing, it'd be like translating a book from one language to another. The only way I can see them doing it for older games (that run fine under DirectX) is if AMD pays them to.

It would take some work, you'd basically have to re-code entire bits of the engine to get the full benefits.

Best off sticking to designing it for new games/engines.

Hmm. Well DICE have always been avid supporters of the PC. A couple of years ago now I grabbed myself two 3870X2 cards for £50 each and went to work. It was mainly to disprove what people were saying about Quadfire (IE saying it works fine, how the latest drivers..... yawn).

Any way of all of the titles I tested (and there were many, 20+) the only one that actually embraced Quadfire and worked (so well they demolished my 5770 CFX set up) was Battlefield : Bad Company 2.

We also know how well BF3 runs on AMD 8 core CPUs, again down to support.

If they have made Mantle to work with Frostbite itself (their engine, by talking to it) then it shouldn't, in theory, be that hard to get it to work with all of their games. Surely they would have wanted to see what happens on more than just BF4?

So I'll remain optimistic, as there aren't 15+ titles coming out (last count was about seven tops). That leaves 8+ (which by deduction leaves about 8 games they already have out on Frostbite).

If it were the same engine I'd think it more likely, but Frostbite 3 isn't just a few tweaks on Frostbite 2. It's been re-engineered for multi-threading, etc. and to take advantage of the latest hardware.

It's not that they couldn't port the older games, it is that the older games aren't going to be making much money for EA, and they perform absolutely fine under DirectX on current gen GPUs, so there's no real reason to bother.

True !

I only recently played through BFBC2 again in single player. Man, what a game. Makes BF3 look silly. I hope BF4 has a good single player game in it :)
