So what inputs have you got on your HTPC?

Hi all

I'm building my HTPC and am wondering what remotes, mice, keyboards and anything else would work best as input devices.

Do I have to get a Microsoft remote to get it to play with Windows 7 Media Centre? Or would it be best to get a universal style remote such as Logitech Harmony, and does this work with Win 7 Media Centre?

What mice work well from the sofa - single hand tracker ball style, and if so what models would you recommend?

Is there a generally accepted keyboard that works well in this application e.g. one that's somehow particularly good to operate from the lap?!

Thanks.

I have a microsoft MCE remote going through the IR input on the LCD panel of may case (Antec Fusion Micro). It works a charm straightaway, and I've always used these remotes on my two previous HTPCs and some others I've built.

The harmony range can emulate them and other remotes at the same time, just a bit more work. Also worth noting, the MCE remote can be programmed to change the TV volume and control TV power.

As for other input, when I need it I have a 5 year old logitech wireless keyb and mouse set that still works just fine from the sofa (with mouse on coffee table). The only time I need to use these is just to start powerdvd for blu-rays as I have version 7 that doesn't integrate with WMC.

I'd say if you're starting from scratch you can't go wrong with a logitech harmony to control all your bits and a wireless mini keyboard with a built-in trackpad. I believe OcUK stock them and that combo will have you totally covered for your HTPC.
