So who has actually took the plunge? (Quad Core)

They don't seem to be clocking quite as high as the Core 2 Duo from the two replies in this thread (not a huge test sample I admit) but if that's the trend then surely they're going perform slightly worse in games at the moment due to the lower clock speed?

I'm sure these beauties will shine next year when games like Alan Wake appear, but they may have dropped in price by then, so personally I'm going to wait.

a lot of people run multiple apps these days, do if your running winamp and typing away in word at the same time then yea dual core will make a difference fo you, and add a web browser and fire up excel at the same time and your looking for quad core to make things run at their best :D :D

That 3.3Ghz clock was a first attempt. ;) will be rebuilding over the weekend with some decent ram to give it a better go.

That's a nice first attempt there. Hope it goes well :)
Your obligation to post your result is stipulated in the rules* so you'd best post back

*might contain lies and/or nuts.

Edit - What is the multiplier on these chips? And is is adjustable?
I'm still on an Opteron 170 so I'm not too clued up.

i dont think its an issue of poor clocks, its mainly due to the heat

i can run mine at 3.7Ghz on water but full load goes as high as 71 with idle about 55.

bit too high for my liking!

Are you having a laugh? At the moment I have about 10 apps running on my X2 4400 with distributed computing projects running in the background and it is running perfectly. I really can't see how quad core would offer any great advantages for day-to-day usage as you suggest. The sort of stuff that most people do in Office apps requires next to no CPU and even video playback and winamp/WMP visualisations require very little - a couple of percent for me.

I think he is, or by that logic i would need a 20 core proccy

That sort of multitasking is best served with HyperThreading tbh. Dualcore is no faster in real use.

Only time I've found dualcore to be better in day-day use is when compiling something big, or working on ASP.NET with the built-in web server.

GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES ENCODING GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES.

with all due respect i can't help but feel that 99% of the people who are getting quadcore atm are living way beyond their needs! hell c2d is more than a lot of people need but i can understand the investment in it as it's so cheap and overclockable!

Agreed, but you should know by now that it's not about hat people "need"... the majorty of people who buy them here wll be benchers/e-penis strokers and then buy them because it's their main hobby and they like having new toys to play with. It's rarely about need...

Lighten up Point Dexter, it was obviously light-hearted.

I can't even get all four cores to show on mine, same board.
DL'ing the bios update now.

I am clocked at 3.2GHz, temps are idle 39/40, load 47/48, sometimes hovering 50 but never higher. Everything worked out the box, no problems detecting cores in either XP or Vista RTM
