Ok guys now i have seen a lot of threads flying around about am2 is good, what is it, etc etc but i haven't seen anyone say i'm going to be the one that's going to test it out and upgrade to it!

So i just want to know who's going to upgrade to it or are we going to just wait for websites to review it and get all the bugs out and be boring? :D Now i personally would love to test it out but personally i don't earn enough to be able to throw away on am2 lol but there must be some of you that have the bottle and the wallet?

thanks guys and go on take 1 for the team

anyone with a current s939 system with a decent clocked cpu would be mad to ditch it for a AM2 setup.

Like me, I have the performance of the FX62 on s939 so there is plenty of life in my "old" system yet.

people are not interested in AM2 as it offers no real performance gains over s939.

If getting a new system in the coming weeks conroe is the way to go.
I think AMD should be worried.

Pointless and fruitless upgrade for anyone on a 939 setup tbh.. DDR2 gains aren't going to be that impressive althpough i'd be interested of course in seeing the reviews and benchmarks.

I'm an a 2 year CPU upgrade path so have another 18 months yet.. by then, the upgrade may be worth it.

I don't know why people break the bank to get the latest stuff, only to find it dated even before their credit card bill hit the door mat. If my system plays the latest games a high settings at a good rame rate.. an upgrade isn't necessary.

upgrade might not be worth it for someone on 939 but, someone looking to buy a completly new system and cannot wait for conroe would be ideal to buying an AM2.

it would be interesting to see how the cheaper AM2 semprons do aswel, could be a cheap system for someone until they wait for conroe

provided mATX £40-50 AM2 boards appear, count me in as a guinea pig :)

Just came across a nice mATX AM2 board.
Asus M2NPV-MX AM2 board.
AMD Live!™ Ready
- NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430
- Dual-channel DDR2 800/667/533
- PCI Express architecture
- Integrated GeForce6 GPU
- Dual VGA Ouput: DVI-D & RGB

Just need to see these in stock.

I'm sure that I read somewhere that the HTT speed on the AM2 boards will be 333MHz offering higher bandwidth and helping to increase the performance of the socket

Does anyone else remember reading this?

Speculation from months ago IIRC. It's still 200mhz.

But thats the point, Conroe isn't gonna be available in the "coming weeks". It's not meant to be launched until July and even then thats gonna be in limited quantities.
Intel are talking of a ramping Core 2 to 20% of total production by the END of the year and if Woodcrest is as good as its meant to be for 1U and 2U servers then its gonna be sucking up a lot of that production.
They aren't gonna be widely available till probably late August/early September. People that think otherwise are gonna be dissapointed.

If you want a new system now then AM2 is the best way to go. It's as simple as that. Hell if your gonna wait for 3 months for Conroe then why not wait another 4 to see what K8L is gonna be like....
Just keep waiting and something better will always come about.

Buy AM2 now, enjoy having the fastest processors around for 3 months, take a backseat while Conroe struts its stuff and then if you are feeling like your CPU isn't up to scratch anymore then get a K8L in February.

This information seems to be quite contrary to the hints that Intel has been leaking. Considering their production yields are exceptionally high and have been rolling B0 steppings off the production line for several weeks now... Remember the demand for these CPUs in the grand scheme of things will actually be pretty low. It takes OEMs relatively ages to incorporate new processors into their lineups. So I think at least for the first month the vast majority of Conroe units will be heading to the retail supply chains. Lets hope OCUK can get their hands on a large batch of them.

Maybe you are right. I have heard that the yields are high but taking into account that Intel themselves said it would only account for 20% of their output in the last quarter, this doesn't leave that many floating about, what with Woodcrest being launched a month earlier. Even if plenty make their way to OCUK and the like on time, that is still 2 months.
Lets hope they are here sooner rather than later though. They look like fantastic chips.
The only issue i have is with people acting as if its only going to be a few weeks. Its not, its going to be a few months (unless Intel decides to move the launch forward again).

The guy who works on the CAD machine at work has asked for an upgrade, which my boss has agreed with in principle. His software isn't multi-threaded and he has a 3GHz P4 at the moment. I've been trying to hold off the upgrade until July for Conroe (they only buy Dell :( ) so I'm hoping that they will have PCs based on this chip shortly after release being a huge partner

we buy Dell at the moment our CAD users use Pentium Ds and they have noticed a performance increase... and CAD doesnt suppose hyperthreading... CAD techs say that it slows the software down

That's interesting

Some software like AutoCAD is multi-threaded but we use SolidWorks which isn't (at least SolidWorks 2004)

When we enabled Hyper-Threading on the PC it really hurt performance in the CAD software which is why we disabled it - I was using that rationale when I was looking at the Dual Core chips

Conroe should be something and it's taken some time coming - our 3GHz PC is a few years old and wasn't top of the line when purchased!
