Be interesting to see if it makes any noticeable difference (more so than the last few generations).

I'm sure the answer is no, but worth a try no? especially if you got a dodgy Chinese ebay special and there is no warranty to void in the first place :P

If anyone has heard of a nutter that's done it already then a link would be great.
 
People who lap there chips need to open their door, step out, have a walk around and realise there is a world outside. Seriously just stick some paste and a good cooler on it ffs.

Btw lapping is okay if you look like this:

It was this comment posted by user andrew8200m in the comments section of the bit tech review that got me interested. (I don't know who he is but maybe some of you do as he apparently posts on OCUK? From the way he talks I've presumed hes associated with bit tech?)

In testing here it was evident that tim application was key to temps. Correct application resulted in a drop of 12c over all cores to mid 70s at 4.6ghz

Without the correct application (typical application with SB) temps of high 80s, even low 90s at times were seen.

Ill get some DATA up on the OcUK forums at some point this week as well as a video for those who are interested.

If super careful TIM application is important then to me it suggests that there are probably gains to be had in lapping...
 
I plan to lap as I have a spare lapping kit laying around and ytf not? :p

Besides, I don't look a million miles away from the gimp-in-waiting picture above
 
I've just seen this thread (which kind of makes my other thread redundant).

This video (using a Q6600) suggests an in the order of 10 degC temperature reduction due to lapping.


In my case it's an easy process as I already have my floatglass set up with 3M lapping film attached (I use it to sharpen woodworking tools; a system known as "scary sharp"). Thus I can easily walk down to my shed and run my CPU through a process of 40, 30, 15, 5, 0.3 micron films using anti-corrosion lapping fluid.

What's the current best thermal paste recommended?

There was a very specific reason why lapping Q6600 chips yielded good results.

The IHS weren't flat on them, so coolers didn't actually make contact in the middle of the chip.

Anyway, lapping is for wimps. Who is going to be first to remove the IHS? :D

If you buy me a replacement if it breaks
 
If its true that the retail chips do use tim between the IHS and the silicon my bet is you will see more people removing the IHS than lapping.
 
OK. When I get my CPU, I'll check the flatness of the IHS with my Veritas straight edge. Maybe I'll just remove the thermal paste from the Antec water cooler and lap that instead.

I have some ancient Shin-Etsu thermal paste (a 2005 vintage). I wonder if it will still be OK? I wonder if today's thermal paste is better?
