so whos running the FX-9590 AMD CPU?

The problem with many RTS games is that after 12 hours or so,during an MP game, you usually find them hitting other issues too(like the RAM limit),and yep the Intel CPUs are faster than the AMD ones, but its more a case of a slideshow with twice the framerates!!

The thing is, the 760 is still a great cpu. I wouldn't say its not an upgrade though. i think once you overclock say the 8320, it'll better the 760, true not by much when gaming, especially since you're already @4ghz. Obviously it'll come to life if you use any program/game that uses more than 4 cores.

But as echo'd the 9590 is pretty much an overclocked 83xx. Once we find out what the next amd socket is, then you'll have a better idea what to do.

the FX-9590 at its current price point is neither here nor there. I do wonder how many people unwittingly bought one at the original price, when it was £650+. That must be annoying, maybe even ruined some people's day. Perhaps a few of them didn't take the news so well, over £400 difference, gone. I worry about thier safety.

This is something that could take a while. How long you think this is off?

Haha, this could be anyones guess. i'm guessing end of October/November. It's a big time for amd and i guess we can say their flagship game is Battlefield 4. They will most likely be wanting to say how well their game works on X cpu and their new gpu.

If you have funds and wish to switch to amd. Sell your current set up. Get the 8350 and v formula motherboard and h100 you should even get it to 5ghz. The fx9 is a rip off, everyone knows its OC fx8

Steamroller may not use a different socket, it could be AM3+ with an updated chipset.

Anything on dates is a guess.
I for one would much rather Steamroller be on a new socket. For the sake of being backward compatible with AM3+ could very likely to mean it won't be making as big a performance jump as it possibly can (for example, new platform with better memory controller and making higher speed memory having more impact on real world gaming performance increase at beyond 1600MHz).

I'd be more likely to buy Steamroller if it was on a new socket.

What I don't like is we've seen nothing like a follow up to the Crosshair V formula, or any AM3+ boards really, except minor revisions.

A new socket Steamroller 8 core with a theoretically future proof platform (At least for another chip) could be tempting.

If moving to a new socket means AMD are competitive again then I support it.

If it doesn't then I'd rather they stayed on AM3+.

It'll be odd if AMD launches Steamroller 2-4 core APUs and just does nothing with the 6-8 core CPUs and leaves them on Piledriver. With the consoles being on 8 cores and the emphasis on Mantle using 8 cores, it sounds like that's what they want so something must come along soon.

Going for that FX is a sideway upgrade, it's not any better and will cost you an extra £150 to cool properly. Hell, even the H100i is not enough to stop it from throttling under full load, the fathom is the only thing that is I heard.

The H100i has no issues cooling a FX-8350 at 5.0ghz and i know this cause i have done it with my own h100i and a 8350 @ 5 ghz with no throttling what so ever during stress testing(intelBurnTest, Cinebench and Aida64). The only 2 reasons why an fx-8350@5ghz or 9xxx series would throttle on an h100i is due to crappy motherboard or a very bad chip which i would believe is rather rare.

Yeah i dont really get that one myself. Why release a new socket and put 2 quads and one dual out first. Nothing wrong with a good quad to keep us going till a better cpu comes. Obviously goin by good ole 'Toms Hardware' am3 ends in 2013. So, yeah, possibly no news till the end of the year.

I need to build a system for my son and the 8350 or 8320 seem like a good choice. Not massively cheaper than a Haswell i5 though but for some reason I am not as interested in building yet another intel system.

I believe the AM3 retirement was not including AM3+. Basically, finish with all the Athlon, Sempron, Phenom chips still knocking around. Though Phenom already finished with the 965 disappearing a couple of months ago.

They confirmed an end to FM1 in the same breath, I believe.

I would be disappointed not to see an 8-core Steamroller, though.
